curtainsI first experienced the joy of Don Hertzfeldt when he curated The Animation Show with Mike Judge in 2003.  If you don’t know about it, it’s a wonderful collection of animated shorts from all over the world, in all different mediums, old and new presented theatrically and then later released (slightly modified) on DVD.  The theatrical release of the film featured two archived pieces by Don, the academy award nominated short “Rejected” and “Billy’s Balloon” as well as 3 short segments done specifically for the film.  While every short from that Animation Show was brilliant, it was Don’s bookend and intermission segments (pictured) that really stood out.  Time and time again I have shown these Animation Show segments to house guests with resounding success.  I’d even say they are probably the funniest 15 min ever put on film.  Seriously.  The Animation Show DVD Vol 1 has been available for quite some time and can be found on their site, and I can’t recommended it enough.  But that’s old news.  What this post is really about is at long last a pure Hertzfeldt DVD is being released the second week of August featuring everything he has ever done including the epic “The Meaning of Life” which brought me to tears both times I saw it in the theater for The Animation Show 2005.  Everything has been digitally remastered and cleaned up, and there are tons of extras including, but not limited to:
