When DJ Shea Van Horn moved to India earlier this year, it might have seemed a natural point to end Washington’s wildly popular monthly Mixtape dance party that Van Horn DJs and produces with DJ Matt Bailer. After all, the duo had started the series in 2008 as an inspiration for others working in LGBT nightlife with the idea that it would fade out within a few years “in the hope that some creative kids come along and shove us to the side to contribute their own work to the scene”. Van Horn was half-right in his assumption. In its over eight-year run, Mixtape has inspired a generation of creativity among new DJs and party organizers. But, playing against Van Horn’s initial assumption, no one is eager to kick Mixtape out of the way. Washington keeps dancing just as they keep begging Van Horn and Bailer to keep the party going.
Van Horn returns from India to play the annual Mixtape Pride party at the 9:30 Club this Saturday night, alongside Bailer. The party is one of the most popular events over pride weekend as well as one of the most highly-attended gay dance events of the year. Tickets routinely sell out early, with latecomers still lining up around the block outside the party with their fingers crossed hoping to find a last-minute ticket. We asked the DJs to provide us with a preview mix to help get attendees ready for the main event.
The annual Mixtape Pride Party will be held this Saturday, June 10 at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are available in advance and at the 9:30 Club box office. This event routinely sells out.
