The rain couldn’t stop those looking for a fantastic night out last Thursday when W Happenings presented Ancient Astronauts with Frank Mitchell Jr. in their rooftop lounge/bar. Ask anyone that made their way over to the W Hotel and they’ll tell you, it was “magical.” You almost forgot about the torrid weather unless you caught the reflection of ambient lighting reflecting off rain droplets on the floor-to-ceiling windows (looking out at the amazing DC night skyline, of course). Overall the music was pumpin’ and the drinks were flowing! Hell, the crowd even started dancing — a feat most DC acts don’t get to witness or enjoy.
First to take the stage was Frank Mitchell, Jr. with his eight (at my count, anyway) person band. Mitchell, a mysterious rogue hailing from Washington DC, has a voice like honey and the sensibilities of a man that’d make Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield blush. It’s the kind of music you want playing when you want to rub up against someone after a couple of cocktails.
Ancient Astronauts, consisting of Kabanjak and Dogu, closed out the night with transitions between old favorites that’ll blow your mind. The duo is this bombastic production and DJ team hailing from Cologne, Germany. The phenomenon of “ancient astronauts,” a belief that extraterrestrial beings visited Earth in ancient times to mingle and trade ideas with early human civilizations, isn’t an alien concept to these guys! The cross-pollination and mash-up of ideas, sounds, styles, and a collaborative spirit are their modus operandi. I can’t wait to dance to their sounds again when they perform at A Night At the Newseum: Way Out of Line on March 25th (presale tickets are going way fast! -ed.)
Many thanks to the folks over at ESL Music for helping us put together this fantastic night. You definitely don’t want to miss the next one when W Happenings Presents: Pains At Being Pure At Heart on April 1st! The event is free, starts at midnight and is open to public, JUST RSVP to: [email protected]
