It’s one of the music industry’s great ironies that today, outside of reggae circles, Jimmy Cliff is perhaps better known for his film appearances than his music. In 1995 Cliff released the single “Hakuna Matata,” a collaboration with Lebo M, a song from the soundtrack of the film The Lion King. Even after a string of hits, the singer never quite managed to break into the mainstream, although he seemed poised for international stardom during the late ’60s/early ’70s. Today, his music has achieved a great legacy within the milieu of reggae, standing as a luminary figure nearly as great as Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Fans that came out to the 930 Club last Thursday were in for a treat. Here are Blink’s shots:
