If only three things go wrong on your way to Echostage, you’ve succeeded. Having an Uber pulled over by the cops (no headlights), a non-existent Ellie Goulding photo pass (it happens), and a half-foot snowstorm looming (IT’S FUCKING MARCH, DUDE), nothing could hold us back from a blonde-fronted dance party.
First up: Conway. Part of the solid breed of electronic singer/songwriters coming out of LA, she looked (and performed) a lot like Blondie. Confident, one hand held high in the air, she’s hands-down an opener you should keep an eye on for bigger things. Backed by a few gents (like Blondie), strafing / hopping across the stage (like Blondie), and a raspy / powerful voice (like Blondie), she even rocked the short-crop blonde cut (well…). Too bad Debbie Harry never had access to a Forever 21, nor maybe a prescription pad.
Yes, Ellie Goulding is hot. You know it. She knows it. Case and point:
Yes, Ellie Goulding’s tracks are solid. You know it. She knows it. But, have you given her covers and bootlegs a chance? Sure, hearing the Hunger Games track was nice, but Goulding THRIVES when re-imagining downtempo tracks. Case and point:
- “Your Song” – Elton John
- “High For This” – The Weeknd
- “Tessellate” – Alt J
- “Life Round Here” – James Blake
- “Hanging On” – Active Child
Hell, since you can’t see how incredible she was at Echostage (other than our Instagram of her performing “Life Round Here”) go ahead and download an listen to The Weeknd cover and watch that GIF loop.
Peace winter, Ellie and I are going to body roll into spring.
