Keep On Truckin: Nutella Truck
BYT at large | Oct 19, 2012 | 11:00AM |

by Lauren Jones

The people of DC have been going MFing bonkers over the Nutella truck that has been making its way through the district this week. This frenzy stems from two schools of thought: A) the rich and creamy chocolate hazelnut spread that people are happy just spooning out of the jar is being given away for free. FREE. B) Most peeps haven’t had a chance to make it to the truck because it’s been parking in the middle of nowhere, i.e. Southwest.

It takes a lot for me to leave my apartment any earlier than late but when I heard the truck was only open from 7:00am-12:00pm, I knew it was my chocolaty goodness now or never moment. After schlepping out to Waterfront, I was met at the Metro station by Jimmy, who was happily handing out free samples and directing people (well, just me) to the truck. Upon arrival, I was excited and not at all surprise to see no line. The lovely ladies in the truck serve up tasters of Nutella on a baguette or awaffle—obviously I went for the waffle, who are we kidding? And that’s it.

A murdery after hours featuring exclusive access to the BRAND NEW exhibition Murder is Her Hobby: Frances Glessner Lee and The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death! Frances Glessner Lee crafted her exquisitely detailed miniature crime scenes to train homicide investigators to “convict the guilty, clear the innocent, and find the truth in a nutshell.” These dollhouse-sized diorama composites of true crime scenes were the equivalent of virtual reality in their time, and helped to revolutionize the emerging field of forensic science. Constructed in the 1940s and 50s, they are still used to train homicide investigators today.

A little history: Nutella was created in Italy during WWII. Because of the rationing of cocoa, hazelnuts were used as a supplement to extend the cocoa supply.

The truck will be at 3690 O St NW (Georgetown) today and then it’s off to Baltimore. See their Facebook page here. You can also get your Nutella fix in a variety of forms at these local places:

Point Chaud Cafe and Crepes

Cafe Bonaparte

The Pretzel Bakery

Seventh Hill

Crepes on the Walk
