“Damien is out of his goddamn mind,” begins a recent essay by Joshua Tillman.

“Damien” is Damien Jurado.  Joshua Tillman is someone you may know better as J. Tillman, or by his fantastical alter ego, Father John Misty.

Tillman is a sensation of sorts right now – a guy who made dour and light-depraved folk for a half decade before harnessing the humor of his onstage-stage banter and pouring it into some both warm and overblown. And it’s hard to listen to his records and imagine that he didn’t listen to a lot Damien Jurado along the way to his figuring things out.  At the very least, Tillman is another well-earned fan.

“Damien Jurado is every character in every Damien Jurado song,” he writes. “He is the gun, the purple anteater, the paper wings, the avalanche, the air show disaster, Ohio, the ghost of his best friend’s wife.”

Jurado has worn a number of faces over the past seventeen years and twelve albums.  He’s been a slinger of sparse and sweet folk songs.  He’s purveyed shambling rock.  He’s dabbled in lo-fi soundscapes.  And working with silver-eared producer and musician Richard Swift, he’s found a strikingly fruitful creative partnership for the past three albums.  This week, the most recent of these – the richly textured and kaleidoscopic Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son – was released on Secretly Canadian Records.

Jurado visits DC9 this Sunday. We celebrate this occasion by picking our favorite songs of his.

The show is sold out, because Jurado makes wonderful music and people appreciate that and DC9 is a cozy venue.  But we have a pair of tickets to giveaway.  Let us know what song we missed and what an injustice that is, and we’ll pick select a winner come Sunday.
