Signing up for a CSA is always a great idea, but especially this year if you want to limit trips to the market and don’t want to rely on delivery.
CSA (in case you didn’t already know) stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and it offers consumers a direct line to farmers for local, seasonal, ultra-fresh produce. You can pick up boxes of quality fruits and vegetables weekly once you’ve signed up, and you’ll likely be exposed to loads of new ingredients you might not have picked up on your own; in other words, it’s pretty much the greatest subscription box of all time.
Dreaming Out Loud’s Black Farm CSA in particular is an excellent choice if you live in the DC area; they create economic opportunity for DC residents, and they work directly with Black farmers and food producers to bring you great boxes each week. Here’s how it works, according to the website:
“From July 15th to November 18th, members receive 8 weeks of fresh fruit, vegetables and prepared foods at Kelly Miller Farmers Market or at one of our convenient community pickup locations including:
- IDEA Public Charter School, 1027 45th St NE, Washington, DC 20019 – THURSDAYS 10am – 2pm
- All Souls Church, 1500 Harvard St NW, Washington DC 20009 – SATURDAYS 3PM – 5PM
- Congress Heights
We offer flexible pricing including FREE produce for families in need. Just select a Produce Plus share in the online store. Purchase boxes through our website and schedule a delivery, or opt for pickup to pay with your EBT.
Delivery is not available at this time but we will update this section if we are able to offer it again.”
Examples of things you might get from week to week include: apples, green beans, broccoli, berries, cabbage, carrots, celery, corn, cucumbers, greens, melons, onions, bell peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, radishes, squash and tomatoes.
You can get a Large Share for $210, which includes 5-6 items each week throughout the whole season, or if you don’t think you’ll be able to get through all that, you can opt for the $105 Small Share ft. 3-4 items instead. Both are incredible value considering you’re getting 8 whole weeks of fresh, local produce that most other supermarkets would charge an arm and a leg for. (Or would not have in the first place.)
And after the summer season is over, you can choose to renew your CSA for fall, which is when there’ll be 8 more weeks of fresh, local produce headed your way.

Food and land sovereignty are key issues in the fight for racial equity and justice, Dreaming Out Loud does crucial work in this arena. Even if you’ve already joined a CSA, or don’t have a need for one at this time, you might also consider making a donation to support the important work they’re doing. You can do that here.
