Well, it certainly IS Friday. We have this fancy Weekend Survival guide published for you, but what’s a weekend (especially a MEMORIAL DAY weekend) without some HOT JAMS?!

Below you’ll find all the tunes keepin’ us sane right now; click the links for music videos, and/or just hit up THIS SPOTIFY PLAYLIST (which features some bonus songs chosen by the #BYThings Instagram followers) for a WHOLE EXPERIENCE!

P.S. Consider this an open thread – leave your picks in the comments and we’ll add them to the playlist. Last week’s picks are here.

Andrew Rondinone’s Picks:

Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande – Rain on Me

First off – this song makes you just want to dance. Tell me your toes aren’t wiggling when you are listening to this? Secondly, it’s really incredible to hear the back story behind this song. If you haven’t listened to her Apple Music One interview (admittedly, I’ve only heard clips) you should go listen to it. (then fill me in on the parts I didn’t listen to yet).

Blondie – Call Me

This is just a classic – it’s incredible. Blondie is still pumping out the jams – have you heard Long Time? Anyway – Call Me is that exact sort of ramp up music you need in times like these. Plus, with the amount of calls I’ve been on – it’s more fun to scream in your head “call me” as you’re writing it.

Wes Della Volla’s Picks:

Shea Diamond – I Am America

This is America at their very best. Big, bold, blended influences, and bubbling over with creativity. If you’ve been watching the HBO series We’re Here you’ll recognize this infectious blend of soul, pop, and Motown-esque energy.

SONIKKU – Let In The Light (ft. Douglas Dare)

Queer house/pop perfection. FULL STOP. SONIKKU’s debut release Joyful Death is a near perfect collection of nine tracks that span the range of dance influences through a fresh perspective.

Foxes – Love Not Loving You

One of my favorite voices and lyricists of the past decade returns with a new single just as unconventionally amazing as her. The funky pop grooves feels free and liberated. The lyrics embracing acceptance and self assuredness. Foxes has returned, and I am thoroughly excited.

Marissa Rubenstein’s Picks:

Mikky Elko – What It’s Like Now (Devault Remix)

My sister introduced me to Devault and I have been obsessed for a few months now.

Devault – Nothing But You

Did I mention I love Devault? He was supposed to come to DC before COVID cancelled everything. This is a good dance-y tune or to sing to an animal friend.

Special PROJECT PRIDE announcement day bonus:

Diplo and DJ Snake – Drop (ft. Big Freedia)

We announced our + Smithsonian’s Project Pride youtube concert event today and I have been dancing to this all morning (Big Freedia is one of the artists performing!) Check out the full lineup and more info here.

Megan Burns’ Picks:

Carly Simon – Why

HBO v. kindly invited me to the virtual premiere for Love Life (ft. Anna Kendrick) last night, and the first episode made the incredibly correct move to include Carly Simon’s “Why”, because it is CRIMINALLY GOOD. (ALSO CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED.) It’s pretty much a perfect summer tune, and while summer has cruelly chosen to forsake us this year, I will still be crankin’ it up real loud as I sweat profusely in the confines of my apartment. Also, please take a moment to look at this fucking music video oh my GOD:

Carly Rae Jepsen – Summer Love

Our lord and savior Carly Rae Jepsen blessed us with Dedicated Side B yesterday, and while I refuse to choose a favorite track (THEY ARE ALL BOPS), I will say “Summer Love” is a vibe.

Ace of Base – Happy Nation

I bet you thought we were going FULL CARLY today, but I’m not about that predictable life, y’all! A friend posted Ace of Base’s “Happy Nation” with zero explanation the other day, and I was like, “Yeah, true!” Because yeah, true! Also, that whole record STILL SLAPS. (I stand by the time I accidentally broke a lamp in our rec room when I was six because I got too hype on “Voulez-Vous Danser”.)

Mere Chamber’s Picks:

Fun song to workout to.
Easy song to listen to while cooking or running.
I love to run to this song – I instantly want to move my body.
Another amazing song to run to.

Erik Loften’s Picks:

Alabama – The Closer You Get

So this song is doing a lot of lifting getting me through this quarantine.

Breakbot – Lockdown Boogie

Been putting this on a lot and dancing while holding my dog’s paws and he eventually bites me.

Sébastien Tellier – A Ballet

I secretly want to be this guy.

Big Thief – Mythological Beauty

I have a terminal Big Thief disease.

Jaime Wyatt – Wasco

I love country music and any music video with beat up cars driving through western landscapes. A real soft spot.

Beach Bunny – Dream Boy

Wash it all down with this song that’s been stuck in my head for a week.
