FINALLY! Everyone in Capitol Hill will be out of town so we can enjoy happy hour in peace without the politics. The RNC is taking place in Cleveland as you may know, so everyone and their mother (or, er, colleagues) will be in Ohio instead of clogging up the bars during your precious happy hour time. There will be more space to sit, more air to breathe, and more alcohol to be consumed, it’s a win-win for everyone involved. This week’s Happy Hour Hotline will be places all around Capitol Hill to celebrate the lack of people around town. More drinks for us.

City Tap is getting in on the RNC happy hour fun! Towards the final days of the convention, City Tap will offer what they’re calling an “All-American Flight and a Bite” on July 21 and July 28. For $20.16 you too can enjoy a hot pretzel with mustard that comes paired with four beers from 21st Amendment Brewery. They also have happy hour Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Specials include $5 beers, $6 house wines, and a $7 beer and shot special. Grab a craft brew and a seat at the bar — odds are you’ll have a lot more bar space and stools to choose from.

The usually-packed Union Pub will probably be so much more roomy now that all the politicians and Hill workers have moved to Cleveland for the week. Located within walking distance of Union Station, Union Pub is the quintessential Capitol Hill bar and will be the perfect place to reside after a long day of doing office things. They offer happy hour Monday through Friday 5 p.m. to close, with specials changing every day. Specials include $5 rail drinks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and $12.50 Bud Light pitchers on Fridays. Maybe even buy a round of drinks for every one at the bar — you probably won’t spend more than $20 (maybe).

Apparently Capitol Lounge does not like Bud Light or politics so be warned (I feel like that’s probably a good thing though). Capitol Lounge offers happy hour Monday through Friday which includes a $1 off all drinks and various food specials, like $6 pizza on Mondays or $1 tacos (and Coronas!) on Wednesdays. The Hill is alive with all of the drink specials!!! Just kidding it’s a lot more quiet now that everyone is gone.

Apparently Paul Ryan used to work at Tortilla Coast, so in honor of the RNC you should probably head over to Tortilla Coast to get some margaritas. Happy hour is offered every night from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. so you have plenty of time to get your drank on. Original, strawberry, or swirled margaritas are $6, select beers are $4, and they also offer food specials like $4 wing baskets or $4 queso. Grab an extra basket of chips and another cheap marg, there’s no rush to get out of there because it’s super crowded.

Stanton & Greene has a cool new mixologist so this place should definitely be on your happy hour hit-list this week. They offer happy hour Monday through Friday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.. They have specials like that of $7 gin and tonics, $6 red/white/sparkling wines, and $2 off the small bites menu. Cool drinks, cheap food, and less people: the three best ingredients for a good post-work happy hour.
