Guy Fawkes Day is this Saturday (Remember, remember the 5th of November?), so we’ll be showcasing the best music videos that focus on guns, explosives and of course… assassinations. It’s going to be oh so violent!
We can’t have a tribute week to music videos with a violent, terroristic, guns ablaze and explosions galore edge without bringing up M.I.A.’s “Born Free.” In short, the 10-minute video, directed by Romain Gavras, follows a SWAT-like team as it rounds up a band of redheads from a housing project and proceeds to kill them one by one. Within 24 hours the video was banned from YouTube because of the graphic nature of the video, which includes a scene where a young boy getting shot in the head — reminiscent of Eddie Adams’ Pultizer Prize-winning photo of a suspected Viet Cong leader’s street side execution — and another of a prisoner getting blown to pieces in slow motion by a bomb.
As a ginger, I do not approve of the genocide of my people (we’re apparently already going extinct all on our own) … but as a lover of art (and violent art, at that), it’s definitely something to watch and talk about.
