Local restaurants have had to be nimble and imaginative to continue their business during COVID-19. Some are offering cocktails to-go, pre-prepped meals to be cooked at home, and boxes of local produce to generate extra income. One of the best trends is creative vegetarian meals for takeout. Here are four fine dining spots serving enticing vegetarian meals to-go.
This new restaurant has kept itself afloat these last few months with the advent of their two-night dinner delivery service called Feast. The deal includes two nights of meals, with heating and cooking instructions. Feast serves a vegetarian option, where the two nights of meals includes items like a spring asparagus tartelette, where puff pastry is baked and smothered in a garlic chive béarnaise sauce and topped with asparagus, egg yolk fettuccine with a pomodoro sauce, and grilled veggie kabobs. This basically sounds like the best two nights of dining ever.
During the quarantine, Komi transformed itself from a high-end, fine dining venue into a casual, vegetarian to-go shop called Happy Gyro. The quality of food is as decadent and divine as it was when the restaurant was still Komi. I am obsessed with the vegetarian gyro, which comes with a garlicky, creamy tzatziki and tart pickled peppers. The celery root Rueben is also a favorite; super earthy and hearty with swiss cheese, coleslaw and a sour and tart tamarind pickle sauce. The options are endless: black walnut tacos, white pizza with smoked mozzarella and mint, and vegetarian steak n cheese. Definitely get a few sides; the entrees are on the smaller side, and more importantly the sides are insanely good. Hortopita, which is spanakopita’s cousin, but made with spring greens like swiss chard and chicory instead of spinach, is flaky and cheese and addictive. The baked ziti runs out fast, so if you want that, order as soon as they open! And for dessert, the devil’s food cake is a requirement.
Since April, Equinox has launched vegetarian family dinner night specials, which currently include a vegetarian lasagna that feed four, or one quart of sautéed wild mushrooms and poblanos, served with all the fixings including corn tortillas, purple cabbage slaw, BBQ sauce, crispy onion straws and pickled jalapenos. The lasagna is comforting and delicious, but I am sold on the mushroom tacos! With summer in full swing, this meal sounds like the perfect patio dinner. Margaritas not included but recommended!
This Adam’s Morgan Italian spot is selling dinners to-go right now where you can get an entrée with freshly baked garlic and herb focaccia, a salad and buttery cookies. The vegetarian entrees are plentiful, including a kale and ricotta lasagna, campanelle with broccoli raab and pistachio pesto, and baked lumache with three cheese and garlic spinach.
