We thought it’d be good to gauge last week’s SXSW madness from the POV of some of our favorite music publicists; below we’ve got the low-down from Nancy Lu (Fancy PR), Rich Nardo (24 West), Claire Julian (Nettwerk) and Amanda Perlstein (Partisan Records), so READ ALL ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW:
How many times have you been to SXSW, or was this your first year? This is my eighth year!
What was your reason for attending? I love coming back home to Austin (I’m from here) and SXSW is by far my favorite festival. It’s still such a great week for listening to new bands and meeting up with other folks in the industry. I also had quite a few artists playlist showcases and threw one myself on Saturday the 19th!
Where’d you stay, and would you stay there again? I stayed at my younger brother’s apartment in West Campus close to the University of Texas. He’s in his last semester of his Senior year and moving to Houston over the summer so RIP lil brother’s apartment.
What was your favorite moment? Me and my event partner Brandon Bogajewicz didn’t quite know what to expect for our Double Dutch showcase on Saturday night and I was full of nervous anxiety in the hours leading up to it. But the first artist in the line-up Miya Folick really kicked thing off playing to a packed room and it stayed that way for the rest of the night! The showcase exceeded my expectations in every way and the SXSW and venue staff were just fantastic.
And what was your least favorite moment? Thursday because that’s the day I decided to wear wooden clogs.
What’s the best thing you ate while you were in Austin? PLUCKERS WINGS!!!
What’s the weirdest thing you saw during your trip? I wouldn’t necessarily call it weird but TOTALLY AWESOME. When I was at Hype Hotel I saw a guy wearing a silver metallic fringed leather jacket that had wings attached to it. His had the shoes to match.
Any new band discoveries you’re excited about? I loved Kill J, Pr0files, Paperwhite, SOFI TUKKER, POWERS, and MUNA….there’s definitely more though!
Finally, what’s your recovery plan? Lots and lots of sleep zzzzzzzzz
How many times have you been to SXSW, or was this your first year? 6th year!
What was your reason for attending? I attended because we had two bands (Run River North & Savoir Adore) down there for a slew of showcases and some press.
Where’d you stay, and would you stay there again? Hotel Van Zandt, it was AMAZING. I hope I am lucky enough to stay there again. They even gave us a free upgrade to a suite! It was pure luxury. Exactly what you need after a long day hustling around in the heat.
What was your favorite moment? I think my favorite moments were watching our bands play to the packed crowds and seeing how people connected to the music.
And what was your least favorite moment? It was a pretty good time! I don’t think I had a least. Maybe just trying to navigate 6th street at night with all the drunk college kids or getting turned away from Hinds & Jack Garrett at the Hype Hotel because it was too crowded.
What’s the best thing you ate while you were in Austin? Everything at La Condesa. The tacos, ceviche, guac sampler. Take me back!
What’s the weirdest thing you saw during your trip? Hmm coming from NYC nothing really weirds me out. I think maybe the “trend” of matching lipstick to your hair. We saw one girl with purple lipstick and eyebrows and another who dyed her armpit hair to match her lipstick. I hope that does not become the next “big thing.”
Any new band discoveries you’re excited about? I really loved Haelos and Miya Folick.
Finally, what’s your recovery plan? I went to a nice long yoga class yesterday and spent way too much time on my couch catching up on Netflix and eating Chinese. Perfection.
How many times have you been to SXSW, or was this your first year? First year working, 2nd year attending
What was your reason for attending? Supporting & coordinating press for 4 of our bands: Bombino, Dilly Dally, Made Of Oak & Pure Bathing Culture
Where’d you stay, and would you stay there again? An Airbnb on the east side where I had my own bathroom, so 100% yes.
What was your favorite moment? Watching Bombino play for a few journalists in his Airbnb’s backyard that had multiple gardens, hammocks, wind chimes – we dubbed it the secret garden.
And what was your least favorite moment? Waiting to get breakfast tacos at food truck, Veracruz, but having to leave before they were ready to get to airport.
What’s the best thing you ate while you were in Austin? Sushi at Uchi
What’s the weirdest thing you saw during your trip? Multiple fans dressed as clowns/ aliens at Black Angels show at Scoot Inn
Any new band discoveries you’re excited about? Into It Over It, Diet Cig, Kacey Musgraves (not new, but she was so great live)
Finally, what’s your recovery plan? Sleeping 12 hours a night for a few days
How many times have you been to SXSW, or was this your first year? This was my second SXSW. Not a first-timer but it’s still new enough that I was stoked to be going.
What was your reason for attending? Other than for the tacos? We had a bunch of clients playing so we wanted to make sure we were down there to support. Plus, it really is a great networking opportunity. We’re based in New York, but a lot of our clients are based in other cities so its great to have a week where pretty much the whole industry is in one spot so you can get some in-person bonding time with people you work with everyday but don’t get to see that often.
Where’d you stay, and would you stay there again? I stayed at an AirBnB right on the river. It was a little bit of a hike into town everyday but I would definitely stay there again. There’s a really beautiful boardwalk along the water that we walked on our way in every morning. It was a nice way to start the day.
What was your favorite moment? Probably getting to see Lil Dicky at the Pandora House Friday night. Either that or meeting Kylo Ren at The Yard.
And what was your least favorite moment? I was under the impression it was going to be raining Friday…it wasn’t. Instead it ended up being super hot and I was ill-prepared so I got a pretty wicked sunburn. Luckily vodka helped me forget about it pretty quickly.
What’s the best thing you ate while you were in Austin? My friend Alex and I found this place Woodrow’s the first day we were in Austin last year and it became sort of our home base. $3 Lone Stars, outdoor patio and probably my favorite tacos I have had in Austin. The BBQ at the Billions x Ticketfly BBQ on Thursday was pretty amazing, too. Not sure who did the catering but there were pickles in the potato salad and it changed my life.
What’s the weirdest thing you saw during your trip? I was asked by an older gentleman if I wanted to ‘feel his bass’ Wednesday night. That might have topped the list.
Any new band discoveries you’re excited about? Definitely! I saw Naked Giants at Longbranch Inn Friday Night. They were insane. One of the best live bands I’ve seen in a really long time. I also caught Tory Lanez at Pandora House and was instantly a fan. Marcus King Band at The Yard was also a huge find. I’ve actually been listening to them on Spotify all morning, They’re awesome, vintage soul with a funky twist. Similar vein to Alabama Shakes.
Finally, what’s your recovery plan? Lots of House of Cards and pizza.
