The D.C. punk rock festival that is Fort Reno returns Monday, July 8. And if you can’t make it on July 8, never fear, as the festival runs until August 8, hosting some of D.C.’s best, and cutest, punk rock bands. I say cute because some of these bands’ members are still in middle school. Punk rock lives on.

If the young age of some of the performers doesn’t convince you that this festival is extremely family-friendly, maybe its strict no drugs or alcohol policy will. The events are free so all the money you saved on a ticket can be spent at the closest bar afterwards.

This year’s line-up includes The Evens (Ian MacKaye’s two-piece band), Feed the Bird (an adorable trio of middle-school aged boys), Bearshark, Sunwolf, and Paint Branch. If punk rock isn’t your scene but you still want to see a free show, consider The Washington Bach Consort, classical music by the lovely Johann Sebastian Bach, on July 18th. The Accidentals, a local acapella group known for their covers of popular pop and R&B songs, will be performing July 29th.

If you’re a punk rock parent who wishes they could return to that music scene but can’t because, ya know, kids, this festival is just for you. And even if you’re not a punk rock parent, it’s a cool, free show that’s outside, not mega-crowded or any drunk guys spilling beer on you.

Fort Reno is held in Fort Reno Park (shocking, I know), a 10-minute walk from the Tenleytown Metro stop. All of the shows start promptly at 7:30 p.m. and are over by 9:15 p.m. Though don’t get on them for that detail: the park lights aren’t very bright and who wants to go to a show they can’t see?
