The weather is beautiful, summer is a month away and it’s a great time to be outside. What does this all add up to? Derby season. The 141st Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday, so get prepped for the afternoon activities with a delicious Southern brunch that will make the two minute Running of the Roses as riveting as possible. A mint julep or two, maybe even five, will also help.

Red Derby – Stop by this 14th St favorite for its annual Big Hat Brunch, and enjoy your first of many mint juleps for the day. The brunch menu includes breakfast staples such as french toast and breakfast burritos, as well as the always delicious breakfast bowl with potatoes, eggs and cheese. Mint Juleps are only $5, and if you have on a rocking hat you might be able to score a drink for free. If you stick around for the race, enjoy derby pie on the house while watching the festivities from one of the bar’s three big screens.

Logan Tavern – This Logan Circle bar offers a delicious Southern-inspired brunch every weekend, with favorites such as boneless fried chicken with gravy, fried chicken benedict and the french toast with caramelized pecan sauce. Basically, if you like fried chicken, this is the place for you. Stock up on create-your-own bloody Mary’s, and then hang around until 3 p.m. when the bar turns into a Kentucky Derby party to restock on drinks and eats. Food specials include fried green tomatoes and Kentucky hot brown, and there are three different types of juleps for you to pick from, in case you’re over the classic mint variety. Prizes and contests are also on hand, and of course, you’re encouraged to dress in your derby finest.

Bourbon Adams Morgan – Kick off the day in Adams Morgan with, of course, more mint juleps. Bourbon hosts its derby Brunch Party starting at 11 a.m. and continuing throughout the day with drink specials. Southern dishes such as wings n’ waffles, pulled pork hash and biscuits n’ gravy will make you feel like you’re in the south. The dress code is derby attire, which means whatever floppy hat and seersucker clothing you prefer. Plus, enter the raffle for the chance to win a rare bottle of bourbon.

Bourbon Glover Park – The 12th annual Kentucky Derby Party at Bourbon starts with an extended brunch from noon to 4 p.m., offering Kentucky-inspired cuisine, $6 craft mint juleps and $8 derby punch specials. Stick around after brunch for free hors d’oeuvres such as mini hot browns and stuffed cherry tomatoes. Make sure to get there early to snag a seat on the back patio or at the bar.

Rebellion – Get your southern food fix at this Dupont joint, and then stick around for the 2 p.m. crab boil and enough juleps to make sure that if you’re not already drunk, you will be soon. Fill up on shrimp and grits before the crab boil, and take advantage of drink specials such as $7 mimosas. Plus, if you’re rocking the best outfit around, you might even win a $100 Rebellion gift card for more brunches in the future.
