The 14th and U St. NW area does not need a new cocktail bar, but no one that drinks cocktails near 14th and U St. NW is going to complain about the recently opened Quarter+Glory.
A few doors down from The Gibson, Quarter+Glory is the happier, brighter version of the 14th St. mainstay. Both establishments serve well executed drinks in the $12 to $14 range. Q+C lets in light. The Gibson does not. Q+C has a happy hour. The Gibson does not. Q+C has signage. The Gibson does not. Q+C has high ceilings. The Gibson does not.
Quarter+Glory is the first D.C. outpost of NYC’s Public House Collective. The people behind The Rum House and Ward III have brought another version of The Rum House and Ward III to the District. That’s not a bad thing. Q+C is new but looks and feels worn in in the way you want an old cocktail bar to look and feel.
We sampled a few of the drinks in “The Originals” section of the extensive menu. Each drink deserves to be on the menu but should be ordered after consulting the knowledgeable staff. X, made with Plymouth Navy Strength Gin, Brennavin, Maraschino, Green Chartreuse and Lemon, is a great final drink of the night. If you prefer something that tastes like orange juice, go with the Call Me, made with Fords Gin, Giffard Pamplemousse Rose, honey and Champagne.
We stopped by on their first night of happy hour. At 7 p.m. every seat was taken. Half the patrons were in groups from 3 to 6, a mix of co-workers and friends. The other half were dates. So many late 20 somethings to mid 40 somethings on first dates. It is a very good date option before or after dinner.
Quarter+Glory is located at 2017 14th St. NW. They’re open Sunday through Thursday 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., Friday and Saturday 4:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Happy hour is Monday through Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. They do not have food service but it’s in the works.
