This Monday Bastille, the contemporary French restaurant owned by husband and wife team, Chefs Christophe and Michelle Poteaux—executive chef and pasty chef, respectfully—re-opened its doors at its spacious new location in Alexandria. After eight years at its old site, the restaurant has relocated to North Fayette Street, which provides more dinning space, offering seating of a total of 140, and also has an upgraded kitchen, allowing Michelle further in-house baking and more room for other cooking techniques not possible before in the previous space.
The décor is bright and cozy, the way you’d except from a French café. Long windows allow for enough light so that even during an overcast day the cool green walls give off plenty of warmth. Cosmopolitan black-and-white photos run along the interior walls, the dinning setup is comfortably straightforward, consisting largely of black tables and chairs, the beautiful granite bar counter top is set upon rich woods, a miniature statue of the Eiffel tower stands on the host’s stand. There is nothing out-place or misguided, and the overall effect is simple and elegant.
The menu will continue to be the same seasonal-inspired, local-sourced modern day French cuisine. “French cooking that is looking to the future with a foot in the past,” as Chef Christophe explained. By utilizing innovative of new cooking techniques and showcasing the diverse flavors from North African and the Middle East that reflect the make-up of modern day France, Bastille aims to provide a more authentic contemporary Parisian dinning experience.
In the old location on North Royal Street is now Bastille’s sister restaurant, Bistrot Royal, a causal neighborhood French bistro.
Bastille is currently only open for dinner. But beginning January 31 brunch and lunch will be added, the bar will open on February 2. Bastille is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner, with weekend lunch and brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bar will be open from noon to 11 p.m. daily, with weekday happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m.
