Even after a four year labor of love, Donnie Simpson is surprised he’s still not tired of muffins.
Why would he be? His five-day-old café, Uprising Muffin Company, sells the best around in a cozy hangout off of the Shaw metro stop. Even better – each muffin only contains 10 ingredients, or less. It’s all part of his emphasis on freshness and quality. While you may be used to the out-of-the box variety, wait until you try one baked only a few hours prior to your arrival.
With nearly 36 unique recipes, Uprising satisfies all of your muffin needs (and desires). While the Pumpkin, Blueberry Streusel, and Lemon Poppy Seed are some of the muffins you’ll see every day, they also offer specialties like Maple Pancake, a decadently iced pastry that tastes exactly like a molasses-topped diner breakfast. They also offer a savory muffin – filled with bacon, egg and cheese (no lie) – with a vegetarian one in the works.
Still, muffins aren’t the only item Simpson and his team offer. Complementing the breakfast menu is a comprehensive coffee program thanks to local roaster Ceremony. As sweet, rich and moist as the muffins are, expect a similarly delicious cappuccino or mocha – the latter featuring their made-in-house chocolate syrup. Afternoon visitors can also expect a salad and sandwich menu, featuring their Roasted Turkey BALT – the A standing for avocado – with chipotle aioli.
Whether you need a new WiFi-enabled hangout in Shaw featuring local artwork by Michael Crossett, an early morning breakfast-to-go, or a quick lunch, Uprising is your new go to spot.
Uprising Muffin Company is located at 1817 7th St. NW, and is open from 6 am – 6 pm Monday through Saturday, and 7 am – 3 pm on Sunday.
