Congratulations, you no longer have to travel all the way out to Georgetown to grab some Instagram worthy vegetarian tacos. Just make your way over to Brookland and feast your eyes on the impeccably designed, Fox Loves Tacos. Brought to you by the same people who own Little Red Fox on Connecticut Ave, Fox Loves Tacos is a bright and welcoming coffee shop / taco shop specializing in vegetarian and vegan tacos as well as craft coffee, juice and kombucha.

There’s a lot going on in the small space, but owners Matt and Jena Carr seem to be balancing everything nicely. From the taco menu, to the coffee offerings, to the design of Fox Loves Taco, everything feels purposeful and well thought out. The Matisse meets Saved By the Bell mural is eye catching, and conveys everything you need to know about the space, this is the kind of spot that wants to put a smile on your face. No bad vibes allowed.

Anywhere else, that would come off silly in a bad way instead of silly in a good way, but the Carr’s have the chops to back it up. Not only are they well seasoned in coffee (you only have to check out their sister store to know that), but they’ve been able to create a damn good taco menu. I’m not a vegetarian, but I would have no qualms returning to get some more taco action.

You have the option of corn tortillas or flour, and while it sounds sacrilegious, go with the flour. They’re handmade with sweet potato and butter and you could eat them straight off the line (like we did). When it comes to the fillings, our favorite of them all was the Jerk. Made with jerk marinated tofu, a pineapple red cabbage slaw, plantain gremolata and a lime crema, it’s a perfect mix of citrusy and savory. while the jerk marinade didn’t shine through as much as I hoped it would, the paintain chips and lime crema really sealed the deal for me on this one.

If you’re looking for something a little meatier, the Kwasi is a great choice. It’s got a cauliflower chorizo that definitely stands out from the crowd, but it also includes purple sweet potato and jalapeño puree, salsa verde and pickled red onion. The chorizo flavors really reach out and grab you, and the combination of salsa verde and pickled red onion works so well with it. There’s also the Power-Up with features marinated shiitake and portobello mushrooms, a carrot and jalapeño slaw, queso fresco and Vin Cotto. If you like mushrooms, you’ll love it.

If you need a quick pick me up, or just want a cute spot to meet a friend for lunch. You’ve come to the right place.
