The newest Busboys and Poets opened to much fanfare in Takoma Park last week, where there is a great demand for new dining options. The vegetarian friendly, politically active Busboys and Poets is an excellent addition to Takoma Park, which is also known as The People’s Republic of Takoma Park” or “The Berkeley of the East.”

This new Busboys and Poets is right down the street from the Takoma Metro, and includes a bar area, dining room, and a Politics and Prose bookstore dividing the bar and main dining room.

The menu is similar to its sister restaurants, with classic American food including sandwiches, pizza, salads, and pasta. Vegetarians and vegans will love the variety of options, like veggie sliders, vegan spaghetti and meatballs, mushroom tacos, and vegan chili. One of my favorites was the tofu coconut bites; where tofu is bread and fried to a golden crisp. Since it’s tofu you can eat it guilt free even though its fried!

Be sure to get a order of the vegan cheesecake. Vegan cheesecake? Really? Yes, really. It is creamy and luscious and I have no idea what they put in it to make it so good but it is divine. Enjoy it with a cup of D.C.’s Compass Coffee, which will be served all day long.

The soft opening is over, so come on by for food, drinks, or to browse the bookstore. See their website for info on happy hour, and details on events like the International Women’s Day celebration, which will take place on March 8, 2015 and is hosted by community residents. Looks like Takoma Park residents have a new favorite spot!
