By now, you’ve all probably made your 4th of July plans (if not, consult our 4th of July Guide) and all you need now is some patriotic snacks. While there are picnic basket options galore, we perked up when we heard that RareSweets (at 963 Palmer Alley in City Center) has created a series of First Lady inspired desserts, so we had to take a gander at the offerings. And, much like with most things that involve Raresweets, we were not dissapointed: a perfect balance of classic Americana and a modern twist, these should go down extra easy over the long weekend. But hurry! Raresweets is not open on July 4th, so you have to grab these by COB July 3rd.
- Lady Bird Johnson’s Lemon Bars $2.50. A little tart, a little sweet – Lady Bird Johnson was known to serve a lemon bar recipe popular in her native Texas.
- Eleanor Roosevelt’s Angel Food Cake $5 per slice or $40 for a whole cake with mixed berry compote. Inspired by the book “Amelia and Eleanor go for a ride”, which recounts the story of Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart (good friends who shared a love for flying), and their flight together in April of 1933, from Washington DC to Baltimore. The book ends with a recipe for angel food cake, a nod to the clouds they flew threw together.
- Hillary Clinton’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies $2 The former first lady was known for her award-winning chocolate chip cookies, which were pitted against those of another former first lady, Laura Bush. She often baked these with Chelsea, and her original recipe was an inspiration for this treat
