Sampson McCormick is truly a Renaissance Man. He’s a published author and an accomplished stand up comic with 3 albums out in the world and a DVD on the way. This morning I changed out of last night’s pajamas and into another pair of pajamas. I am working from home.

Tonight Sampson will be bringing his amazing brand of comedy to The Howard Theatre with his show That Bitch Better Be Funny and trust me when I say…this bitch is funny.

Sampson: When I picked up the telephone I wanted to sound cute.

Jenn: I feel like there is never a time you do not sound cute. When I wake up in the morning I look like a lesbian…like I woke up and replaced all my bras in the middle of the night with sports bras, which is fine. It’s more comfortable.

Ha ha ha ha

Speaking of gay people….ummm…you’re gay

Ha ha ha…speaking of gays let’s talk about what you do.

You’re gay! Um, no…well you are…but I want to talk about your big show tonight at The Howard Theatre. Now this isn’t the largest venue you’ve performed at, right? You’ve performed at The Kennedy Center.

I performed at The Kennedy Center last year on the Millennium Stage.

Me too! I was a wreck because I had to do a clean set. And I was like I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.

That’s what I”m saying but I still managed to sneak one in there, and people’s reactions made it completely worth it. I think I asked because bitch is my favorite curse word. Someone on Twitter said I was being misogynistic. I hadn’t even called anyone a bitch I was referring to a situation as a bitch.

Here’s what’s funny about that though and the same argument can be used for the word cunt. If you want to call me a cunt, why would I be angry? You’re just calling me another word for a vagina and I’m not going to get offended by a vagina because I have one. A bitch is a female dog and I love ladies and I love dogs. Try again. A word is only as offensive as the person hearing. If an offensive word falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it WE’RE ALL FINE.

Right, right and a lot of people don’t understand that. That’s actually one of the things I’m going to be tackling at the show at The Howard. This year has been the year of race again. I feel like I’m back in the 90’s again. We have all these people saying all these things like Paula Deen.

It has been crazy….and your show at The Howard Theatre is a benefit show.

Yes, everything I do I try to tie it back into the comedy because I believe in advocating for people and for causes that help the community. Sometimes I am just lazy and sometimes I just don’t have the time to be as involved as I’d like.

There is no way you’re lazy because you have 3 comedy albums and you’ve written 2 books. You’ve been on BET, MTV and you’ve performed AT THE WHITE HOUSE.

Yes, earlier this year…was it earlier this year?

I don’t know. I think I would remember when I was performing at The White House.

Well I feel like I could find a way to do more things. I wish there were more ways I could be a little more involved.

Don’t you think, and again I don’t want to minimize your accomplishments, but by the simple fact that you are a gay black man doing all of this you’re already making a difference in terms of other people in a similar situation who might not be comfortable with their sexuality. Just by being a presence you’re doing something…and then on top of it you’re very funny.

Thank you, you are wonderful.

Are you feeling pretty good about the show?

I am but I am also paranoid…I’m like I’m not going out I’m not leaving the house. I don’t want some cops to roll up on me for mistaken identity and throw me in jail and miss the show. I don’t want to get hit by a car. I don’t want some pterodactyl to come down and grab me. I don’t want to get sick. I have been wiping everything down with Lysol. I cannot afford it. Maybe on the 28th I can catch a little cold but anytime before that hell no.

This sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Well I’m sure you’re going to be fine and the show is going to be brilliant.

It’s gonna be funny. It’s gonna be introspective. It’s gonna be thought-provoking. I’m really looking forward to it.

So are we!
