Welcome to BYT’s newest “hot damn, how could I live without this” column, Eating Out. We’ll be highlighting one food or booze special event every night of the week. From the best happy hours in the city to the uber expensive $500 per person tasting menus, there is something good to eat or drink every single night in this city and we want to help you find it. And yes, we do get the joke.
This week I’m attempting to focus on haunted / spooky / Halloween themed food events, and there’s nothing that says says it’s Halloween in D.C. than the annual High Heel Race. Stop by the BBQ Joint ahead of time to fill yourself with delicious meat and hang around for the costume party. There are also going to be Absolut cocktails. You’re definitely going to be hungover tomorrow.
Between the giant pumpkin full of beer and this sweet Beetlejuice dinner, City Tap House is doing the coolest food / beer Halloween themed events in the city. They’re basically just screening the movie and offering five courses dinner paired with some delicious Allagash beers. Some of the menu items look spooky (like the bloody cherry cheesecake) but all of it sounds pretty damn good.
Okay so this isn’t technically spooky or scary, but it does involve over 120 samples of whiskey and the damage that will do to your body is the scariest thing of all, so it kind of sort of counts. JW Marriott is going all out, there will be super premium scotch and single malt, but don’t let that scare you. If you’re just dipping your toe into the whiskey world, that’s fine too. Doesn’t matter how much you know about whiskey, being drunk is the great equalizer.
I can always count on Black Squirrel to be a bastion of good in a sea of college students getting wasted, and Friday night is no exception. Not only will there be craft beer and Halloween candy pairings, but there’s also going to be a horror movie marathon featuring movies with our favorite monsters Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees. Fun fact, I once wrote an erotic short story about Freddy and Jason on the third floor of the Black Squirrel and you can read all about it right here but please don’t tell my mom.
You’re probably going to be hungover from the night before so stuff yourself with fruits. Try all of their heirloom apples, but definitely stay for the apple pie baking contest because pie is the solution to everything.
Your week looks delicious.
