In this column, I cover songs for you to nod your head to in the EDM scene [electronic dance music, not extra dancey music, for those not in the know].
And in “upcoming events that will make drum’n’bass heads *really* happy,” we have:
Bass Avengers on October 18th and 9:30 Backbar featuring Ricky Force, Julez, Rogue State, and Plus Good. Straight gully jungle business; not for the faint of heart or ear.
Depth Perception Presents: Bailey on October 29th, Red Maple in Baltimore. Also featuring Godfather Sage, Slant, and Lady Shah.
Lindsay Lowend “Bar Harbor“
DC local Lindsay Lowend is a masterful purveyor of downtempoish, R&B sample-happy slow jam deconstructions in the Kaytranada vein. I mean who else could tell the totally-unromatic Ginuwine “My Pony” sample and elevate it to such great heights?
Sampling the bass line from Jai Paul’s “Jasmine,” Us, by Australian trio Movement, stays true to its shadowy dance ethos.
Machinegun “Gunshotta (Om Unit’s Rollers VIP Remix)”
Om Unit once again demonstrates he is on that minimal ragga business tip–some deep vibes on this remix.
Lukas Freeman “Loving You Wrong“
This is some grimy, gnarly stuff that recalls Tricky’s Maxinquaye days by Londoner Lukas Freeman.
Aluna George “Best Be Believing (Shadow Child Remix)“
The garage-meets-house remix of the rather forgettable Aluna George tune is definitely worth checking out.
