In this column, I cover songs for you to nod your head to in the EDM scene [electronic dance music, not extra dancey music, for those not in the know].
- Ivan Ives – Stranger
This past May, Crossfade Roulette premiered 8mm, a track by rapper Ivan Ives produced by RJD2. Ives’ new album Stranger releases this coming Tuesday, the 24th. The album is a must-get for everyone who does not want to a stranger to brilliant hip hop. Equally talented as a film-maker and an emcee, Ives has a wry, noirish, cinematic story-telling sensibility that truly shines on this upcoming release, which is for the grown and sleep-deprived (I mean you expect cheeriness from a Russian dude!?). The iconoclastic L.A.-based rapper has always managed to remain original and consistently brilliant in his very prolific output. Stranger is a far cry from the usual party-and-bullsh*t scenario, yet it is also not backpack rap emo territory. In a sense, the title alludes to the pervasiveness estrangement we are feeling. Dark–maybe; melodramatic–hardly. This is one is for all you workaholic Olympic insomniacs. If you pre-order the album at ivanives.com, you will get an exclusive download of a bonus song.
- Godfather Sage X First Aid – “A Better Day“
This is what I can say about this record: my Mom liked it. Or as she put it, “All this other noise you post…this is nothing like that. I love this.” EDM has been redeemed! Noisy Meditation is a Baltimore-based, international-roster-boasting record label founded by Baltimore native Kian Asamoah, a.k.a. Godfather Sage, focused on cutting-edge electronic music with deep and atmospheric vibes. A Better Day finds Godfather Sage teaming up with Korean producer First Aid to create a true post-drum’n’bass masterpiece, taking the genre into some bold new cosmic territory..
- Machinedrum – “Gunshotta“
North Carolina-born, Berlin-based producer Travis Stewart has been *the* purveyor of music spanning the entire spectrum of UK bass in his work as Machinedrum and as one half of Sepalcure. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he has been at the vanguard of some of the best edm in the past couple of years. On “Gunshotta”, the latest leak from his forthcoming album Vapor City (September 30), he gets down with some ragga jungle business not for the faint of heart. It’s grimy, gritty, and thrumming….and totally enthralling.
- Seka – “Cessna“
A chill house track that is part of this month’s Stamp The Wax mix.
- FloFilz – “Tito“
German producer FloFilz has been holding down the front on jazzy, head-nodding downtempo tunes and hip hop remixes. His album Dialog is out already.
