Our adventures at Awesome Con continue. Thank God! Our talented BYT photographer Franz Mahr had the brilliant idea of taking photos of one cosplayer as he/she goes from normie to HERO! We reached out to the folks who entered the costume contest and eventually decided to spend some time with Katie Fleming, who traveled to DC from Luray, VA, after she told us who she planned on dressing up as for this event. You can view some of her handiwork here. I can’t stress enough the fact that Katie made every single part of this costume, from the headpiece to the staff. I was really quite impressed. I may or may not hire her to assemble my next Halloween costume. I’ve decided to go as a functioning adult human being with little to no debt who can actually get a credit card and/or a house. At this year’s Awesome Con, Katie chose to channel Angelina Jolie from her upcoming film, Maleficent.
So what’s your day job?
I currently work in Tourism!
How long have you been doing this?
I started cosplaying in October of 2012, so only about a year and a half.
What got you interested in cosplay?
In 2012, I attended New York Comic Con. That was when my interest in cosplay first developed. The level of talent and the people I met there were amazing and blew me away! You wouldn’t believe some of the costumes! It was as if you just stepped into a new realm where all your fantasies and favorite characters come to life! I just had to try it for myself! So that same year (Actually that very month), I put together my first cosplay (The Mad Hatter) and wore it to a small local convention with some friends who also cosplayed for the first time! Ever since, I’ve been addicted!
Why do you do it?
It is a way for me to express myself and exercise my creative genes a bit. I have always been sort of a creative person. I love the arts, especially theater. It is something I am drawn to. And I have always had a nerdy/quirky side to me. I love video games, comics, television shows, etc. Cosplay is a way for me to combine all of my interests together into one hobby! And on top of that, the moment that you see the smile of the faces of people when you first step out onto the con floor in a costume is unexplainable. It makes all the hard work and effort oh so worth it! There is no other community more accepting and supportive than the cosplay/con community. It is amazing to be part of something like that!
How many conventions do you attend in costume each year?
I am fairly new to the hobby but last year I attended 4 total. Awesome Con makes 4 this year already! I hope to do several more throughout the year!
How long did it take to make the Maleficent costume?
I worked on Maleficent over a period of a month. I honestly lost track of time but I would say I put in at least 80 hours of work into the costume.
What if the movie sucks?
Gah, I really hope it doesn’t! Regardless, I still had a blast making and wearing this cosplay! At the end of the day, it was all worth it! But honestly, from what I have seen, Angelina Jolie is going to make the perfect Maleficent! If this movie sucks, it won’t be because of her! I would be surprised! I am anticipating this movie to be a big hit! I suppose we will have to wait and see!
If you’d like to run into Katie at other events you can keep up with her whereabouts on her Facebook Page: Katie Fleming Cosplay. She will be at the Virginia Comic Con this Sunday, April 27th. She hasn’t revealed who she will be dressing up as so you’ll have to go down there to find out!
