A dreamscape of lace, sequins, and color was warping my tangible world into a bliss of Spring opulence and Deco-infusions. Models clad in hand embellished silk Newaz minis from All Saints, sheer floor-length maxis and twenties brights from Neiman Marcus’ CUSP, gorgeous METAL MUSINGS necklaces from Ginger Root , alongside intricate lace from Treasury Vintage left me weak in the knees to say the least. Cocktails, like fashion and art, bring LIFE to the everyday (and to a party!) – and that is exactly why the Corcoran’s 1869 Society decided to fuse these highly complementary worlds with a little BUBBLY. New York-based artist and painter Nina Chanel Abney is just one of several American artists whose work is being featured alongside her contemporary colleagues, Jane Hammond and Rob Fischer, as well as several generations of artists past to include: the arresting 1936 oil-on-canvas Into Bondage by Aaron Douglas to as far back as the early 16th and 17th c. Dutch Masterworks. A range of such innovation and art provides the perfect setting for an equally diverse pairing of highly curated vintage with the latest en Vogue fashion.

Sequined dresses and chiffon high-waisted pants are apparently required for any planned excursions and/or galas hint hint to the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s ARTINI GALA, taking place on Saturday, March 31st from 8:30 PM to Midnight. Not only did these items pair well with nearly every other item we pulled but they ALSO complemented nearly every piece of art in the gallery. Needless to say, the ladies of Butler + Claypool will be happy to know the chiffon pants did not make it back to their showroom but rather a new home in Dupont Circle. A tailored Spring jacket or All Saints sequined top (as shown above on the Corcoran’s main stairwell) creates the perfect “creative cocktailwear” in seconds flat.

Model Ben Click chuckles as he dawns a highly structured black wool jacket from Redeem F/W 2011 collection in front of Nina Chanel Abney’s Behind Every Good Man. He looks like one of her figures- having just emerged strong and cool from the forefront of her painting. It’s quite an appropriate fit for the piece, we all agree. “I want the work to provoke the viewer come up with their own message, or answer some of their own questions, ” says the artist in a recent interview with Huffington Post. With a little help from our friends at DC’s Redeem and possibly a cocktail in hand , it won’t be too hard to imagine our own story-line for this one.
