  • Heavy duty glam rock band A Giant Dog headlines the Empty Bottle, preceded by Chicagoans Bleach Party and Detroit psych heads The Deadly Vipers.
  • The Field Museum’s staying open late tonight for Base Camp: Americana, a special pop-up bar showcasing the best of authentic nuggets of Americana culture, soundtracked by local stalwarts Jon Langford and Devil in a Woodpile.
  • Thrillingly offbeat indie rock band Palm headlines Beat Kitchen with support from Palberta and Lala Lala.
  • Woke Up Standup is a very cool looking new standup comedy showcase focused on showcasing performers of color and/or LGBTQ comics, complete with a surprise headliner, coming to Cole’s tonight.
  • Third Eye Blind is playing at the Huntington Bank Pavilion tonight! They’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic debut album. Congrats, fellas.
  • Old timey folkies Glass Mountain play an early show at the Hideout today.
  • And then local jazzman Nate Lepine plays the Hideout’s late show.
  • Ok so the Taste of Chicago happens all weekend and that’s fine. They’ve got some solid music booked this year, including tonight’s headliners Café Tacvba and a stacked second stage showcasing some quality Latin music.
  • The Lincoln Park Zoo’s monthly adults-only, no-kidz-aloud, just-4-grownups evening of wine and animals returns. It’s called Adults Night Out and it’s waiting for you!
  • Get your cowboy punking on tonight as Two Cow Garage and Death and Memphis play Subterranean, if that’s something you’d be interested in.
  • Super Doppler and American Grizzly are at Schubas tonight.
  • You’ve got two more chances to watch The Music Box’s brand new print of 2001: A Space Odyssey projected in 70mm and they’re both tonight. Get over there and vibe out.
  • At North’s got a party celebrating the three month anniversary of the monthly standup comedy showcase Freakfest with Stalter. Congrats, gang!Hbar on North Ave’s live music series returns with a set from local soundscapist V.V. Lightbody.


  • West Fest is one of the better street fests in terms of musical guests, for sure. Electronic music pioneers ESG headline tonight’s mainstage, with appearances from folks like Durand Jones & The Indications and HUJO rounding out the bill.
  • Boston indie rockers Palehound headline a sure-to-be-packed show at the Empty Bottle, with support from RIPS and Clearance.
  • The Hideout’s lovely recurring outdoor music series Picnics on the Porch is back for another session to kick off your weekend, with music from Big Sadie and snacks from Local Foods.
  • The Music Box’s 70mm Film Festival continues today with screenings of Sleeping Beauty and Top Gun. What a double feature!
  • More Taste of Chicago tonight, the big headlining show features Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals with an opening set from Twin Peaks, with the 2nd stage celebrating Folk & Country Day.
  • Local standup Lainie Lenertz records her debut album live at Cafe Mustache tonight. Go be respectful and laugh at all the right parts and generally enjoy being a part of a live album recording!
  • Long running indie rock twopiece Now, Now play Lincoln Hall.
  • Chicago standup institution Congrats on Your Success is back at Uncharted Books in Logan Square with another heavy duty lineup.
  • Johalla Projects hosts the opening party for a big exhibition of works from graffiti artist Dont Fret, whose work you’ve absolutely seen if you’ve ever like, walked outside in Chicago.
  • Name havers Raveneye, Bubbles Erotica, and Bullet To The Heart all play the same bill at Beat Kitchen this evening.
  • Jared & The Mill, Canyon Spells, and Steve Leaf & The Ex Pats play Schubas.
  • Lincoln Square’s 6th annual Square Roots Festival takes over the Northwest neighborhood with a celebration with music programmed by The Old Town School of Folk Music and a beer garden for the ages.
  • The Siskel Film Center’s screening a digitally restored version of Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece, Stalker.


  • Do some daytime stuff:
  • Today’s Westfest lineup is totally stacked, with folks like Speedy Ortiz, Royal Headache, Femdot, and more. Just like, spend all day over there and it’ll be quality.
  • Square Roots Fest in Lincoln Square’s got a headlining set from living legends the Meat Puppets, so uh, jog up there from Westfest if you can.
  • More screenings today happening as a part of 70mm Fest at the Music Box, including afternoon matinees of Sleeping Beauty and The Agony and The Ecstasy.
  • The fine folks at R&B Yoga are back at it with a sure-to-be-packed session of Beyonce Rooftop Yoga, which, as you can guess, features you doing yoga on a rooftop soundtracked by Beyonce tunes.
  • More Taste of Chicago today, if you’re into like, crowds and stuff. Passion Pit’s playing later on in the day and local rock bands are playing throughout the day on the second stage. Live ya life, do what you want, you know?
  • Ruido Fest in Pilsen is a newer gem in the local festival scene, showcasing the diverse and exciting alternative Latin music scene. Today’s got sets from folks like Molotov, Julieta Venegas, Los Amigos Invisibles, Silverio, El Guincho, and more!

  • Then, night stuff:
  • 107.5 WGCI’s Summer Jam 2017 has an insane bill planned for you, featuring Lil Wayne, Jeezy, Fat Joe, Jeremih, Yo Gotti, and more! Damn!
  • The Empty Bottle’s ongoing 25th anniversary celebration EB25 has a show planned tonight that I can assume will be totally wild, headlined by soulful goofball Har Mar Superstar and GGOOLLDD.
  • Avant-poppers DIANA and Nicholas Krgovich split a bill endorsed by the indie radio folks at Chirp tonight at Schubas.
  • Ok nerds, good news: you and your Star Wars nerd friends can all get all gussied up and head to Millennium Park for a Star Wars Costume Party. What happens once you get there? I dunno, stand around and chat until you get too hot in your C3PO costume and need to sit down?
  • Cartoon genre-busters Gorillaz play Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island, which will be a sensory overloady type experience, I’m guessing.
  • The Music Box’s 70mm Film Festival continues with screenings of ambitious epics Spartacus and Interstellar.
  • DJ Shadow brings his The Mountain Will Fall tour through the very fancy Park West tonight.
  • Rozwell Kid, Vundabar, Great Grandpa, and Engines play Beat Kitchen tonight.
  • The folks at Riot Fest aren’t content to just plan one of the better music fests in a city full of them, no sir. They also have developed a limited-time-only popup restaurant called The Riot Feast, open tonight through September in Wicker Park.
  • Truman & His Trophy celebrate their totally real and actual 100th Birthday as a band tonight at Subterranean, with opening sets from their friends in Grammaw, Human Errors, and F2L2.
  • Cult hip hop dude Aesop Rock plays Thalia Hall tonight.
  • Catch Dream Version’s record release show at Lincoln Hall, where they’ll be joined by Marrow, Soft Candy, and The Baby Magic.


  • Royal Headache play the Empty Bottle and frankly they’re one of the best rock bands going if you ask me. Dianetics and Ethers open!
  • 70mm Film Festival at the Music Box has screenings of big screen classics Lord Jim, West Side Story, and Short Cuts throughout the day today.
  • One last day of Square Roots fest is closed out with a bang, music-wise, with a closing set from country rockers Lucero, plus The Accidentals, Skyway Man, and Los Texmaniacs, and more!
  • Final day of Ruido Fest brings you headlining sets from Intocable, Fobia, Mon Laferte, Álex Anwandter plus many more!
  • Today’s ALSO the final day of the Taste of Chicago, so go eat while you can, and then stick around for music from folks like The O’Jays, The Waco Brothers, and more!
  • Bridgeport’s long running community space the Co-Prosperity Sphere hosts a record swap organized by the folks at Lumpen Radio.
  • Lincoln Park Zoo’s got a nice adults-only yoga sesh this morning, if that’s your sort of thing.
  • Local H, Har Mar Superstar, Palehound, Woods, and more round out West Fest day three. These folks know how to program a damn street fest.
  • Hip hop show at Subterranean featuring Spose, Shane Reis, GOD.DAMN.CHAN, JAMS The Flava Child, and Bob The Younger.
  • Emporium’s weekly foosball tournament is back with a dang vengeance. Check it out and maybe win a few bucks playing stickman soccer.
  • Metro’s got a show from Poptone, a goth rock supergroup featuring members of Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love and Rockets, where they’ll play original songs plus tracks from all three aforementioned bands. Nice.
  • Behold The Brave and In The Whale coheadline a show at Schubas opened by Skippin’ Rocks.
