Every Thursday at 9 a.m we mail you our Best Weekend Bets. Best Weekday Bets are similar to our Best Weekend Bets but there’s more options since it’s more socially acceptable to have more fun on the weekend.

ACTIVE: Diag Bar & Grill hosts a fun run/burger + beer dinner where you run first, and feast later.

CULTURE: Experimental/synth superhero Martin Rev played the Empty Bottle this weekend, and will be sharing stories at a special free event at the Chicago Athletic Association’s latest installation of their Storytelling Series, moderated by J.R. Nelson.

FILM: The Music Box is showing a bunch of Stanley Kubrick movies in 35mm this week. Today you can see The Shining, Barry Lyndon, and Full Metal Jacket. What a good place the Music Box is.

FOOD + DRINK: Purveyors of fine culinary experiences Publican Quality Meats has a special Barr Hill Tom Cat Gin Dinner, featuring a multi-course meal paired with various cocktails made from Tom Cat Gin!

FREE: Hang out at Atomix Coffee Shop and watch a free screening of David Lynch’s Inland Empire, as a part of their ongoing Blood Cafe film series.

MUSIC: The Owl’s got a queer punk rock party/drag show with live tunes from Bev Rage and the Drinks and Radio Shaq with drag performances throughout the night!

OUTSIDE: Soak up every bit of summer in Chicago you can and do some yoga in the Churchill Field Playlot Park this evening! 

STAGE: The Pivot Arts Festival’s brings you Broad Night, a multimedia double feature focused on the demystification of women’s health issues.

STAY IN: AMC’s buzzed-about new series Dietland, adapted from the hit novel of the same name, premieres tonight.

ACTIVE: Take a walking tour of the 606, learning about the history and future of this iconic Chicago trail.

CULTURE: The International Music Foundation’s Rush Hour Concerts presents a free, 30 minute performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Arias and Barcarolles by a trio of classical performers from Chicago at the St. James Cathedral.

FILM: Head straight downtown from work to catch a free screening of John Waters’ camp classic Hairspray at Millennium Park.

FOOD + DRINK: Have a nice Tuesday night booze and gaming sesh for a good cause at Headquarters Beercade’s Drink 4 A Cause: Paws Chicago. A percentage of bar sales go to Paws tonight! Good stuff!

FREE: GMan, the best bar in Wrigleyville, has got BYO Beans: A Drag Loteria. Loteria is sort of like Bingo, but different! Should be a good time.

MUSIC: Killer rock show at the Empty Bottle featuring Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires, Navy Gangs, and Fake Limbs.

OUTSIDE: What if you booked a ride on the Spirit Lakefront Dinner Cruise? Hit the open seas for dinner tonight and enjoy a ride on a big old boat.

STAGE: LGBTQ storytelling show OUTspoken returns, with true, personal stories from members of the Chicago LGBTQ community! 

STAY IN: Face Off is like Top Chef but for special effects make up instead of cooking. It’s good. Season 13 premieres tonight on Syfy!

 

ACTIVE: It’s Global Running Day today so uh, get out there and run, you know?

CULTURE: Avant-garde theatre fest Physical Festival has been hanging around Stage 773 since the beginning of the month. Tonight you can catch a performance of Drunken Half Angel, which blends a series of short puppetry and mask works into a wild whole!

FILM: Opening night of the latest edition of the long-running Chicago Underground Film Festival has the Chicago premiere of Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records at The Logan Theatre.

FOOD + DRINK: Enjoy a beer pairing dinner at Forbidden Root, a four-course prix fixe feast showcase of their in house chef’s mastery of flavor.

FREE: Schubas’ 100% Off Bands free concert series is back with crazy drink specials and free sets from locals like Impulsive Hearts, Wyys, and Fauvely.

MUSIC: Culty indie rock band EELS plays Thalia Hall tonight. People love these guys!

STAGE: The Chicago Hip Hop Theater Festival comes to Clarendon Park Community Center as a part of the ongoing Year of Creative Youth in the City of Chicago. Catch up-and-coming performers from throughout the city performing new, original works and more!

STAY IN: Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok hits Netflix today. I think people liked that one, right? I can’t keep these damn things straight!!!
