Incredibly stacked late night show at Subterranean’s Downstairs space, starring a bunch of excellent locals: Blizzard Babies, Fake Limbs, Basement Family, and Espejos.
  • Very good Chicago-based rock band Ratboys are celebrating the release of their very good new album tonight at Schubas, with guests Mother Evergreen, Special Death, and Sincere Engineer.
  • The Uncle Art Gallery hosts another installment of Bread & Butter, a charming, BYOB comedy show hosted by husband and wife duo Danny & Liz Maupin.
  • Heady psych vibemasters Tonstartssbandht headline Empty Bottle, with opening sets provided by Cafe Racer and M. Sage.
  • The John Mayer/Grateful Dead smashup Dead & Company play the first of two shows at Wrigley Field tonight so uh, avoid Lakeview this weekend.
  • Monkey Wrench is a cool new comedy/variety showcase that features standup from some of the city’s best, most progressive comedians and musicians at the very nice Elastic Arts venue!
  • Hit up the Downstairs space at Subterranean early tonight for a concert featuring Boney, Walrus, Blessed, and Midnight Cruiser.
  • Daley Plaza’s got a nice afternoon mini food truck festival featuring treats from over 10 local truckfolk.
  • Ravinia’s got The Moody Blues playing through their classic Days of Future Passed plus a bunch of their other hits tonight!
  • The Piano Power Hour with Abraham Levitan returns to the Hideout with another celebration of all things piano-related.
  • Knife In The Water, Mint Mile, and Abram Shook make for a very solid bill at The Hideout tonight. I suggest you check it out!
  • David Cook and Kathryn Dean both perform at Lincoln Hall.
  • The Windy City Ribfest kicks off tonight in Uptown. Ribfest is always fun and tasty if a bit overcrowded!!
  • Experimental/fusion guitarist Steve Kimock comes to the Metro with a bunch of other jam/weirdo rock band folks. This is not my sort of thing but might be yours!
  • Red Hot Chippy Peppers play the United Center tonight and tomorrow. Deerhoof is opening, which is just absolutely incredible, because they are a fabulous band and will also make a lot of the audience extremely mad.
  • Imelda May and Nora O’Connor play a classy show at the classy venue Park West.

  • I told you before that the Dead’s back and the Empty Bottle is throwing a stoney brunch soundtracked by Grateful Dead tunes.
  • Brunchtime thing/comedy party/afternoon open mic thing The Late Late Breakfast is back at the Hideout for another day of wyld comedy funtimes.
  • The Music Box’s 70mm Film Festival has a noontime screening of the damn classic Hook today.
  • Extremely good guitarist/songwriter James Elkington plays a free instore at Reckless in Wicker Park.
  • The Chosen Few Picnic Weekend/Music Festival brings some of the hottest names in House Music to Jackson Park this weekend!
  • Lisle’s lovely hot air balloon festival, Eyes to the Skies, happens this weekend. What a wonderful sight, a bunch of big ass balloons overtaking the sky!



  • Incredible double bill at the Empty Bottle featuring two of the best living songwriters, John Darnielle and Owen Ashworth, both better known by their songwriting monikers, The Mountain Goats and Advance Base, respectively.
  • Two Fleetwood Mac members, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine Mcvie, bring their duo act, appropriately titled Buckingham Mcvie to Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island tonight.
  • High quality weekly showcase Salonathon returns with a show based around the theme “If We Were In Charge.”
  • Weirdo metal folks Thou headline Subterranean, with guests Cloud Rat, False, Moloch, and TALsounds.
  • Hit up a pre-4th screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey and meditate on where we’re all headed or whatever.
  • The Hot Mix 5 Festival comes to Union Park today, promising the biggest old school house music festival of the year, featuring Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, Scott “Smokin” Sliz, and more!
  • LTE Chicago’s got a Bollywood Bhangra Independence Day Bash called United States of Bollywood tonight! DJs, live music, and more!
  • Head to Schubas for a set from R.LUM.R, plus an opening set from Iris Temple.
  • Punch House in Pilsen’s monthly Punch Drunk Soul Club dance night is back with more hot soul cuts!
  • The Alma Afrobeat Ensemble and Esso Afrojam Funkbeat coheadline a funky as hell show at Emporium in Wicker Park tonight.
  • Boathouse Cafe in Humboldt Park celebrates their third anniversary with an old fashioned backyard BBQ.
  • Ravinia’s got a performance from the popular opera singer Ryan Speedo Green.
  • Kizuki Ramen in Wicker Park’s hosting an anime night, screening a marathon of Cowboy Bebop, with proceeds from the event going to PAWS, which is great!
  • Go see damn Juvenile live at the Portage Theatre. They get the weirdest throwback rap shows up there at the Portage and I love it.
