You deserve nice, cool things. We all do. So, every week one of the BYT editors will share what’s on top of their wish list right now so you know what it is we are coveting right now, and you can covet it as well (or even buy it). Simple as that.
This go-round we’ve got Kaylee Dugan, BYT assistant editor, who constantly wants things but never buys any of them because at the end of the day she’d rather spend her money on food.
1. Rapture Ready!: Adventures in the Parallel Universe of Christian Pop Culture by Daniel Radosh
I’ve been listening to the podcast Good Christian Fun non-stop since another podcast I love (My Brother, My Brother and Me) talked about it and I have 100% been sucked into the world of Christian pop culture. Growing up loosely and lazily catholic, I have almost no reference point for many of the things brought up on the show. Sure I went to Jesus Camp™, but I spent most of that time playing air hockey (it was great) and making fun of the youth leaders (in retrospect I feel very bad about that). We never listened to Christian music at my house, I never watched Veggie Tales and I hadn’t even heard of the blockbuster Left Behind books until I saw The Leftovers. And yet I am losing my shit over every episode of this show. It’s so fun to hear smart, mostly liberal comics belt out every word of a cheesy Christian pop song and gush about how they haven’t heard it in 15 years. It brings light into my goddamn life. One of the recent episodes mentioned this book by Daniel Radosh and it immediately jumped to the top of my Amazon wish list. I can’t wait to dive deeper into this fascinating segment of pop culture.
I’m trying to solve a lot of my own problems with this, but I also don’t really want to pay $40+ dollars (including shipping) for a fancy beanie, so who knows if I’ll actually end up buying it. The main issue here is that I’ve lived in D.C. for years (seven!), and I don’t own a winter hat. I own winter boots. I own multiple pairs of gloves. I have a horde of scarfs. But I don’t have one thing to cover my sad little head. To be completely transparent, the reason I’m lusting after this particular beanie instead of just picking up a $5 one from Wal*Mart is because I deeply love streetwear. I don’t own any streetwear brands though, because I can seldom afford them and even when I can nine times out of ten the shirt / pants / jacket I like is only available in men’s sizes. Accessories are easier, but as you can see, they still lean way too pricey. Damn that frozen palm tree print is cool though.
3. A vintage bar cart
I want all of them. My Etsy wist list is jam packed with vintage bar carts. Right now I’m especially lusting after these two, but I’d take any old one. I’d rob your grandpa for a good mid century modern bar cart. Sorry.
To match my old / probably haunted bar cart. Obviously.
I’ve been a fan of Blood Milk’s macabre jewelry for years, but I’ve yet to bite the bullet. It’s not because I haven’t found the right design, or because I don’t think the quality is there, to the contrary there’s a ton of shit I would buy of the website right now, if it wasn’t for the fact that I don’t really wear jewelry. I like the idea of wearing jewelry and I want to be the kind of put together, strategically accessorized person who wears jewelry, but I’m not. It seems silly to waste $150 on something I’ll probably forget to wear 50% of the time, but I want it. I want it so bad.
That’s all. For this week.
