 It is pride week in our Nation’s Capital and there is LOTS going on. To help you make sense of it all, we’ve partnered with Capital Pride to dish out all the happenings that you can expect this week. And don’t miss our BYT/Capital Pride Blast Off! party this Friday at Dock 5 at Union Market. Yes, gays in space! So, strap in, count down, and get ready to ride that rocket to pride.

 

Tuesday

LGBT Poetry Celebration
Time:  12:00 PM – 11:30 PM
Location:  Library of Congress

As part of the week-long LGBT pride celebration in Washington, DC, the Library of Congress in hosting an inaugural event with readings by established and emerging gay and lesbian poets Joan Larkin, Kamilah Aisha Moon, D. A. Powell, andDan Vera. The event will also feature a display of the Library’s rare LGBT materials. Book sales and a signing will follow. The event is free and open to the public. Cosponsored by the Library of Congress Rare Books and Special Collections Division and presented in partnership with Capital Pride.

Women’s Spoken Word

Location:  Busboys & Poets (5TH & K 1025 5th Street, N.W.)

Open mic night for individuals from all backgrounds to tell a story through words.  Special attention given to women in the community.

Reel Affirmations Presents: Just Gender
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Human Rights Campaign

Just Gender tackles the little understood world of transgender people. Although Just Gender utilizes some archival footage and stills, it is largely built on a series of interviews of transgendered persons, their family members and friends, health care experts, community leaders and others who work with the transgender community.

“Born This Way” Stories about Queer Culture in America
Presented by HRC, Capital Pride and SpeakeasyDC

Location:  Human Rights Campaign

SpeakeasyDC, one of the region’s premier storytelling theatres, performs an evening of entertaining, thought-provoking, and exquisitely-crafted true stories that showcase a range of perspectives from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community and their allies. Strong language and sexual content. This performance is recommended for adults only.

DC Bike Party Pride Ride
Time: 7:30 PM
Location:  Dupont Circle

Join DC Bike Party and Capital Pride as we team up for the brightest DCBP ever. This year’s Capital Pride theme is “Build our Bright Future” and we’re ready to roll out in style– wear your hottest pinks and your most electric blues for this one everybody! Feather boas and sparkles are strongly encouraged, if not required. The ride will end along 17th Street with the official after party at Cobalt.

Who’s Taking Care of You?

How does one prepare to care for a loved one or oneself when faced with illness or aging? What steps should be taken to avoid feeling isolated? Join AARP for a networking reception and a panel discussion addressing caregiving and isolation. This is a program for all ages.

DC Latino Pride: La Fiesta Dance Party
Presented by the Latino GLBT History Project

The DC Latino Pride celebration will culminate in a night of high-impact cultural performances from DC’s top LGBT Latino and an all-night Latino Pride dance party spinning DC’s best Latin perfect way to kick off Capital Pride weekend! 18+ with ID. Proceeds support the Latino GLBT History Project’s year round programs to preserve history, cultural celebrations, and educational presentations at local and national conferences.

Historic Gay DC Walking Tour – Dupont Circle
Presented by the Rainbow History Project
Time:  2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Location:  The tour sets off across the street from the Dupont Circle metro, Q and 20th St.

In the 1960s, the Dupont Circle area was a center of antiwar activism and the counterculture, an environment in which many of the young gay and lesbian activists of the 1970s learned the tactics of protest.   Dupont Circle became in 1970s and 1980s the center of Washington, DC, gay life.  Join in on this walking tour highlighting bars, homes, and protest spots that have played a significant role in the experiences of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities of the Washington, DC.

Capital Pride Parade

Join thousands of people to watch this landmark event and one of Washington DC’s favorite parades! The Capital Pride Parade travels 1.5 miles through Dupont Circle and 17th Street and ends in the Logan Circle neighborhood. The parade will include more than 170 contingents-floats, vehicles, walkers, entertainment-consisting of local businesses, Capital Pride Heroes and Engendered Spirit awardees, politicians, community groups, drag queens, dogs, and much more.

The classic tale of finding success and romance in the big city is given a contemporary, and unconventional, spin in Alan Brown‘s new film, Five Dances. Collaborating with internationally renowned choreographer Jonah Bokaer, writer-director Brown has taken five gifted New York dancers, and fashioned a story about Chip (Ryan Steele in his first film role), an extraordinarily talented 18 year-old recently arrived from Kansas who joins a small downtown modern dance company.
