At BYT, we like stuff! (We even LOVE stuff!) And we think you might, too, so here we’ll share with you what we’ve been reading, watching, listening to and more. (Sometimes there will be guest stars! Exciting!)
We also wanna know what YOU are loving right now, so let us know in the comments, or share with us on social media! (@brightestyoungthings on IG, @BYT on Twitter)

Book I’m currently reading: Just got the advance copy of BYT/Bentzen Ball favorite Michelle Buteau’s debut book Survival of the Thickest (officially out December 8th) and cannot wait to read it and laugh and cry.

Tune of the week: Charmaine “Bold” – it is a tight, just-bratty-enough 2:03 min of what feels like the right mood for this week.

TV show I recommend: I am all in on The Great British Bake-Off again, and have been enjoying The Undoing on HBO Max too (for very different reasons).

Something I’m excited about: The fact that HOPE IS ALLOWED again this week?

Did I do any celebrating/major exhaling over the weekend? Definitely popped some champagne (I read somewhere DC liquor stores sold more champagne this weekend than the last 2 new years, which seems right), got on the roof, got on the street, smiled at strangers etc.

Book I’m currently reading: Stanley Kubrick: American Filmmaker by David Mikics. This biography mostly focuses on how he developed his films. It’s a good read for any Kubrick fan.

Tune of the week:Friends” by Pale Honey. The days are short but beautiful, so I think it’s time for woozy Swedish indie pop.

TV show I recommend: Another vote for The Undoing. David E. Kelley and Nicole Kidman are great at this kind of pseudo-artsy trash.

Something I’m excited about: Trump lost.

Did I do any celebrating/major exhaling over the weekend? I went down to The White House before the crowds got too big. The shared sense of relief was palpable!

Book I’m currently reading: I just started His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik and am about 3 pages in – but the goodreads description is so good I couldn’t not read.. “an alternate history where Dragons are present and used in the warfare of the Napoleonic Wars like battleships would be.”

Tune of the week: I can’t stop listening to 070 Shake’s “Guilty Conscience”, and my fall playlist now is just that song and like every remix I could find. It’s just too good.

TV show I recommend: The Mandalorian. Pedro Pascal returns as everyone’s favorite single dad for The Mandalorian Season 2 on Disney + (only 2 episodes of the new season are available at the moment). I’d argue vehemently that it’s the best show on  streaming. Everyone thinks is just for kids but it’s really good and I’m not even a Star Wars fan. Every episode is like a mini movie and it’s just spectacular.

Something I’m excited about: Assassins’ Creed Valhalla just came out and I can’t wait to play it! I am now realizing that I have just recommended a book about dragons, The Mandalorian and a video game.

Did I do any celebrating/major exhaling over the weekend? I was standing in my kitchen when all the text messages started and just immediately started bawling. Then I went for a walk with my friend to the Capitol and everyone was like cheering and dancing in the street and it was amazing.

Book I’m currently reading: I started Maria Popova’s Figuring yesterday and I AM OBSESSED. Brilliant, easily the best thing I’ve read this whole year. (And beyond.) It’s the convergence of pretty much all of my interests (science, art, history, feminism, queerness…the list goes on), so even though it’s over 500 pages (the digital version is, anyway) I’m already halfway finished. (PS I cried p. hard reading the love letter that physicist Richard Feynman wrote to his dead wife, Arline // if you would like to maybe cry p. hard, too, here is an excerpt from Popova’s Brain Pickings entry!)

Tune of the week: Not so much a singular tune, but have been listening to Or:la’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix.

TV show I recommend: Apart from a fairy steady stream of old Rick Steves’ Europe episodes playing in the background (via YouTube, v. calming), I guess I’d recommend watching His Dark Materials on HBO if you didn’t catch the first season // new episodes start on Monday // DEATH TO THE MAGISTERIUM!

Something I’m excited about: For Trump to be removed from the White House and, god willing, eventually cease to exist completely? (Also for it to stop being like 70 degrees in November?)

Did I do any celebrating/major exhaling over the weekend? Within eight minutes of the announcement, I was in the street celebrating. I stayed out the entire day, which wrapped up with a dance party that completely took over St. James Place here in Brooklyn. (Never has a crippling hangover been so worthwhile. Four years is a long time to spend waiting to exhale.)
