At BYT, we like stuff! (We even LOVE stuff!) And we think you might, too, so here we’ll share with you what we’ve been reading, watching, listening to and more. (Sometimes there will be guest stars! Exciting!)

We also wanna know what YOU are loving right now, so let us know in the comments, or share with us on social media! (@brightestyoungthings on IG, @BYT on Twitter)

Book you’re currently reading: I am back in thriller land (and movie nerd land) with Elizabeth Little‘s Pretty As A Picture” about a young film editor stuck on an island trying to both edit and solve the true crime story they’re filming. It is, hands down, the most satisfying thing I’ve read all summer mostly because it seamlessly blends my two favorite things: closed environment murder mysterirs (think old school Agatha Christie) and casual Fitzcarraldo references.

Tune of the week: Summer Feelings Lennon Stella feat. Charlie Puth – I have not been 20 in a very long time but this song (and video) makes me feel surprisingly spry. I am not sure if it is ACTUALLY good (I am, as my 4th grade music teacher broke to my mother, completely tone deaf) but it certainly is very catchy.

TV show/ movie you recommend: I just started watching “Frozen Dead” on Netflix because who doesn’t want a winter, mountain top serial killer mystery in their lives in August?
Something you’re excited about: can’t quite talk about it just yet, but stay tuned for an amazing ARTECHOUSE + @VINCEFRASER collaboration next week
Org/ cause you recommend donating to: We are all here for the Postal Service this week (and every week), right? stock up on those stamps / mail some people some presents / send a friend that Spindrift Drifter Pack / give the postal service some money.
First place you will go once it is safe to travel: Perast, Montenegro, ALWAYS.

Book I’m Currently Reading: I started Lizzie Collingham’s “The Taste of Empire” over the weekend, which basically takes a deep dive into British imperialism through the specific lens of food. Super interesting, although I must admit it makes me ultra-fired up about feeling anti-Britain. (I easily get fired up about feeling anti-Britain re: Irish ancestry, and I just got to the second chapter which goes into Irish occupation, so it was inevitable my blood would be boiling ASAP.)

TV Show I recommend: Rita just hit Netflix with a fifth season; it’s 100% one of my favorite shows period, and definitely my favorite Danish show, so obviously I have been skulling the new episodes whenever I have a spare moment. If you like narratives about strong (flawed, rebellious) women, this is the one!

Movie I Recommend: Okay I know that I swore off movies just last week, and for the most part I still agree that the pandemic has weakened ye olde cinematic vibes, but I did cough up $3.99 to rent Clementine in SD and was not disappointed. (Then again, “WILL BRAKE FOR QUEER CINEMA” should just be tattooed to my forehead at this point.)

Tune of the Week: The entire Donnie Darko soundtrack. I rewatched it randomly on Sunday and was like “Holy shit this is incredibly strong in all of the ways!” (You can also count this as part two of the Movie I Recommend section. I feel like people make fun of Donnie Darko but it’s seriously a near-flawless film IMO, FIGHT ME I DARE YOU.) If you’re making me single out one specific track, it’s a three-way split between Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels”, The Church’s “Under The Milky Way” and  Echo & The Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon”. (PS if you’re going “WHAT ABOUT ‘MAD WORLD’?!” I’m going “Fuck ‘Mad World’ you corny clown!”)

Something I’m Excited For: I recently ordered this shirt which just says “A Film By Werner Herzog” in German, and I am v. excited for it to arrive and take its rightful place as BEST CLOTHING ITEM I OWN.

Place I’d Recommend Donating: We’ve been running a weekly column about this exact subject, so I suggest any/all of our previous features! Personally I’ve especially been donating to places concerned with mental health, land and food justice, LGBTQIA2S+ and youth enrichment lately, including Loveland Foundation, Girls For A Change, Black Trans Advocacy Coalition and National Black Food and Justice Alliance.

First Place I’d Travel As Soon As It’s Safe: I think about this literally all of the time, because (before all of this) travel was the only thing I’d usually spend money on that wasn’t like, food or bills or nonprofits or socks or toothpaste. I honestly feel like I’d be down to post up ANYWHERE that is not America when it’s safe to do so, but this whole experience has definitely made me miss my friends in Argentina more than I ever have before (translation: A LOT LOT LOT DOT COM), so I would say Buenos Aires is a strong contender.

Book I’m currently reading: I am um still reading Winter of the Witch, the third book of Katherine Arden’s Winternight trilogy  and I still love it, but because it’s a TRILOGY this is the place in the trilogy where everything is going wrong for the main character and I am very personally upset at the events taking place. My heart is broken.

Tune of the week: Agua” J Balvin, Tainy. Esto es que el mundo necesita ahora, a remix of the Spongebob Squarepants theme song that is truly giving me ~life~. Baby, busca tu paragua.

TV show I recommend:  High Seas / Alta Mar, pienso que todo lo que hace la televisión española es perfecto, y Alta Mar es un misterio maravilloso.

Movie I recommend: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Centuryyou will never hear the word “zoom” the same again. Supernova Girl is a jam. Interplanetary, Megastellar, Hydrostatic / There’s no gravity between us / Our love is automatic! Is Proto Zoa hott? Please discuss

Something I’m excited about: This Saturday, August 22nd, we have an instagram live takeover with Homme DC with artist Chris Pyrate for their Carry Out and Rogue Pop-Up Takeover and it’s going to be great!

Place I’d Recommend Donating: Freedom Fighters DC is a great local organization, and they are working so so so so hard it’s v inspirational.

First Place I’d Travel As Soon As It’s Safe: Hmm if money was no issue I’d be on a plane to Sri Lanka and just nap and surf and ride horses and nap and surf and nap. Realistically though it will probably be to Oslo to see my best friend, as soon as Norway’s borders open (which, could be awhile).
