At BYT, we like stuff! (We even LOVE stuff!) And we think you might, too, so here we’ll share with you what we’ve been reading, watching, listening to and more. (Sometimes there will be guest stars! Exciting!)
We also wanna know what YOU are loving right now, so let us know in the comments, or share with us on social media! (@brightestyoungthings on IG, @BYT on Twitter)
HERE WE GO:
SVETLANA LEGETIC
MEGAN BURNS
Book I’m Currently Reading: I took a break from the usual existentially-heavy material to read Not One Day by Anne Garréta; it’s been translated, which annoys me in that (even though I still really like the melody of the words) it’s probably not as nice-sounding or exact in English as it would be in French. (But I don’t speak good enough French to be able to understand the original, so there wasn’t much that could be done on that front anyway.) It’s basically about a bunch of Anne’s queer hookups, and it’s totally smutty but like, in a smart way, you know? Smart smut. (Here for that.)
Tune of the Week: 110% BENEE’s new track “Snail”. Total bop.
TV Show I Recommend: I got a VPN, so I’ve been watching the shit out of British trash TV shows via Channel 4’s live streams. If you don’t wanna go through the trouble of hacking the planet, you can find a lot of full episodes of things on YouTube, like 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown (which I’ve written about before) 24 Hours In A&E, Escape to the Chateau, etc.
Movie I Recommend: I am not into movies lately, sorry! (I think what I’m realizing about this whole pandemic experience is that I really only like to see movies in the theater. It just doesn’t feel special at home, even though I have a projector. Not at all the same.)
Something I’m Excited About: I ordered the new Cheetos Mac ‘n Cheese from WALMART (DOT COM), and the package is set to arrive by EOD on Friday. (Some of you may consider this to be a depressing thing to be excited about, and you would be correct!)
MARISSA RUBENSTEIN
Book I’m currently reading: I just started the Winter of the Witch, the third book of Katherine Arden’s Winternight trilogy which I love so, so much, and highly recommend for all fantasy readers. It’s a fairytale loosely based in Russian folklore, and is beautiful and heartbreaking and romantic and just all around fantastic.
I also love, love, love Solid State Book’s email ordering process (which is truly the reason I am just steamrolling through all these books lately), you email them the book you want, they call you and then you pick it up at the window of the store and it is always a highlight of my week.
Tune of the week: “Looking for Me” – Paul Woolford, Diplo, Kareen Lomax. Which will make more sense soon, oh and “WAP” because obviously. And this TikTok mashup of Ginuwine’s “Pony” and “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by The Darkness … well just click here.
TV show I recommend: Selling Sunset. I breezed through the new season in about a day. This reddit thread was very exciting.
Movie I recommend: Howl’s Moving Castle, I just re-remembered that all the Studio Ghibli’s are on HBOmax (as are the Harry Potter’s and Lord of the Rings, I feel very targeted.) I used to think it was hard to pick a favorite but then I re-watched Howl’s and realize just how much I structured my whole existence off of this movie, I love it.
Something I’m excited about: We have a really big announcement coming soon and I cannot wait (this is very vague but I promise it is very exciting!!).
