We also wanna know what YOU are loving right now, so let us know in the comments, or share with us on social media! (@brightestyoungthings on IG, @BYT on Twitter)
HERE WE GO:
Book I’m currently reading: After a summer of thrillers I am back on the literary novel train. With a vengeance. In the last week I finished The Dutch House by Ann Patchett (spectacular, as always), Bunny by Mona Awad (weird, and funny and wildly imaginative, like Heathers crossed with Secret History), and Rumaan Alam’s Leave the World Behind (unsettling and prescient and the book everyone will be talking about this month). I wish I was doing nothing else but reading right now. I almost forgot how magical it is to get lost in a novel.
Tune of the week: Bad Boy by Billie Eilish feat. Justin Bieber – slightly ominous fall-appropriate pop that is still painfully catchy.
TV show I recommend: I just finished the Brazilian thriller series Good Morning Veronica on Netflix and it SHOOK me. The sort-of-innocent title hides a world of physiological terror that even I, who watches nothing but murder mysteries, found hard to handle.
Something I’m excited about: For this year to be finally/eventually over?
Last online purchase: I bought a new suitcase because they are SO cheap now and hoping that I will travel again at some point in the future is the kind of hope I can get behind.
Do you have a voting plan?: This is my first year voting as an American citizen, and I have already voted. Did the box drop off thing. Just do it. There are no excuses.
Book I’m currently reading: I’m a few chapters into Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer and it’s real super thus far. (See also: if any of you are already annoyed at how hard I constantly try to foist my beliefs about interconnectedness and the symbolic significance of mycorrhizal relationships onto anybody who will listen, god help you when I’m done with this one.)
Tune of the week: Big fan o’ LAUREL, and she recently came out with a new single “Best I Ever Had” // V. INTO IT.
TV show I recommend: Definitely NOT The Haunting of Bly Manor oh my GOD. GIVE ME BACK MY LIFE MINUTES. (I do, however, recommend getting on the Wentworth train if you haven’t yet; the eighth season hit Netflix two weekends ago, and it’s as perfectly batshit bananas as ever. Think: Orange Is The New Black but on very violent Australian steroids.)
Something I’m excited about: This is my least favorite question every time because I usually really have to dig, but I guess I’m excited to vote on Saturday? (As excited as the overwhelming feeling of existential dread can make you, that is.)
Last online purchase: I rented Kajillionaire at home for $19.99, which I would ordinarily (as in, even during a pandemic) definitely not do, but there are several cinematic exceptions I’m willing to make, Miranda July’s weird brain being one of them. (I also own a projector, so it was a little easier to fool myself into believing it was a semi-theatrical experience.)
Do I have a voting plan? YOU BET! I alluded to this before, but I already have a calendar reminder to hit up my early polling place as soon as you can do it here (again, I’m in Brooklyn), aka this weekend on the 24th.
Book I’m currently reading: Okay so every few years I get it in my head that I need to read Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel. It sounds like it should be right up my alley and I have TRIED at least three times (and I just bought it from Solid State books and my sister reminded me I already had bought it on Audible a few years ago). For some reason I cannot get into it, every single time it just cannot hold my interest. I’m still slogging through at the moment out of pure stubbornness but I am not super happy about it.
Tune of the week: Bron by Lykke Li. I’ve been listening to this song nonstop for at least a week after my best friend sent it to me, it’s entirely in Swedish (Lykke Li’s native language) but it’s so haunting and beautiful and I just love it.
TV show I recommend: I am deep deep into Vikings still, like can’t think/ focus on anything else. spoiler (maybe?) they just raided Paris where I’m at in Season 3 and I think it was one of the best battle scenes I’ve ever seen. The show stresses me out so much, they make even drinking wine a stressful thing to watch (will it be poison? will someone attack from behind? I can’t handle the suspense!). Also I think the new season is here now so I have much catching up to do!
Something I’m excited about: I now live pretty close to NOMA so I am so excited to go take a walk and check out all the Pow Wow DC murals! Some of my favorite area artists participated (Anieken Udofia, Trap Bob, Chris Pyrate, Marly McFly!) but I also can’t wait to check out the work of the artists I’m not as familar with.
Last online purchase: I um.. bought a Trippie Redd hoodie on a whim while I was on vacation last week (which shows why I should not be trusted with idle time) but I cannot wait for it to arrive.
Do I have a voting plan? Already voted! I was so stressed out about it too, I checked the tracking every few hours.
Book I’m currently reading: Brené Brown, Braving the Wilderness
Tune of the week: “Heartbeats” The Knife
TV show I recommend: Black Mirror but only the “San Junipero” episode.
Something I’m excited about: Getting a puppy!
Last online purchase: Fresh Patch – a subscription service for a square of turf to put on my balcony to help with potty training the new pup!
Do I have a voting plan? Mail in! I spent the weekend educating myself on the various local candidates (there are A LOT). Highly recommend watching the local debates on YouTube + this overview from DCist.
Book I’m currently reading: I have not started yet, but I am curious about “Stanley Kubrick: American Filmmaker” by David Mikics. Apparently this biography focuses mostly on the films themselves, and less his personal lives, and I’d rather read the pursuits of a true artists anyway.
Tune of the week: “The Streets Where I Belong” by Annie. Her new album is less danceable, which only heightens the sense of nostalgia. I’m into it.
Movie I recommend: I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Martin Eden.
Something I’m excited about: My birthday is coming up, and as a gift my wife booked a private cinema for four hours.
Last online purchase: Criterion 50% off sale! I got Criterion editions of Breaker Morant, The Night of the Hunter, Barry Lyndon, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Do I have a voting plan? Already voted 🙂
