August is National Black Owned Business Month; while we advocate supporting Black owned businesses year-round, this is a great time to highlight some fantastic enterprises, and we’re super excited to keep it going with the BYT Instagram Live schedule this week – mark your calendars for the below takeovers, and keep checking back as we update!
Tuesday August 11th 1pm ET – Puddin’
Join us for a special treat as the team at Puddin’ walks us through one of their new menu items!
Thursday August 13th 3pm ET – Killa Cakes
Join us for an afternoon of baking with our forever favorite local cake artist Bria Bryant owner and founder of Killa Cakes!
August 22nd 3:30pm ET – Homme DC / artist Chris Pyrate, Carry Out and Rogue Pop-Up Takeover
Tuesday August 4th 6pm ET – Local Meditations CBD Boutique Takeover
CBD is a relatively new household name for a lot of Americans, and some people still don’t know that much about it aside from the basics; one of the things we like best about Local Meditations is their commitment to education and dedication to answering customers’ questions, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that they’re set to take over our IG to talk all about their services!
Wednesday August 5th 12pm ET – Frères Branchiaux – Tutorial and Q&A with the brothers
Frères Branchiaux Candle Co. make our favorite vegan artisanal candles on the planet (seriously, not an exaggeration), and the fact that it’s a company run by three brothers (Collin, Ryan and Austin Gill) is about as impressive as it gets! Check out our 2018 feature with them to find out how it all got started, and then be sure to tune in for their tutorial and Q+A Wednesday at noon on IG!
Wednesday August 5th 1pm ET – Calabash Tea Takeover
We’ve been big fans of Calabash Tea for a while (check out our 2018 Dream Jobs feature with the one and only Sunyatta Amen here), so we’re incredibly excited for Tuesday’s takeover where Sunyatta will walk us through how to properly make tea! Truly a magical business; if you’re not already familiar, prepare to be smitten!
Thursday August 6th 10am ET – Esther Boykin – Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist – Dealing with Loneliness and Boredom
If there’s one thing 2020 has taught us, it’s that therapy is an invaluable resource during uncertain times, be they global, individual, or anything in between. We’re honored to have Esther Boykin helming the BYT IG for a morning discussion on how to deal with loneliness and boredom as we continue to navigate the pandemic as safely as possible; be sure to tune in for some great insight!
Thursday August 6th 12:15pm ET – Walk with Locals: Community Sessions- Gary Williams, Co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer of Creative Theory
Each week we go live with Walk with Locals founder Carl Maynard in conversations with members of the community from every walk of life. This week, Carl goes live with Gary Williams, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Creative Theory– a “culture-focused marketing agency”.
Friday August 7th 10am ET – Bailiwick Clothing Takeover
Get those Friday fashion vibes going with Bailiwick! They’re taking over our IG (watch this space for timing updates) to close out our first week of National Black Owned Business Month celebrations in major style. (In the meantime, check out our 2016 interview!)
Friday August 7th 12pm ET – Sun Gods Clothing Takeover
Bohemian Afro-Chic lifestyle brand Sun Gods Clothing will be bringing a midday dose of style to our IG; we’ve featured them in BYT holiday gift guides of years past, and they’ve also joined us for some IG livestreams, so we are extremely stoked to have them back with us this week!
Again, be sure to mark your calendars and continue checking back for more updates as we build out the schedule! Have suggestions? Send an email to [email protected]!
