Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the weirdest doo wop song of all time: Rang Tang Ding Dong (I Am The Japanese Sandman).
It’s by The Cellos, a group of Manhattan high school kids who caught the favor of someone at Apollo Records. It reached #62 on the charts, and was a minor sensation in 1957, but subsequent singles failed, and both the band and Apollo Records disbanded shortly after. Bummer.
Fun Fact: the song was covered by the Masked Marauders, the infamous super group consisting of the Beatles, Dylan, and the Stones. Actually they were just a bunch of Berkeley musicians hired by Rolling Stone to appease the gullible public who was ravenously searching for the fake record after they had published a hoax review of it. Anyway, don’t bother, this original is way better.
