So I was having a little early birthday celebration with my folks last night and they gave me this hilarious “1979 Remember When… A Nostalgic Look Back In Time” book which opens with the line ‘The richness of life lies in the memories we have forgotten’ (which I am now having embroidered on a throw pillow) followed by various advertisements, facts, and figures from that year. I decided to do a song from the book before I even got to the music page and was ecstatic to find the crown jewel of 79, Good Times by Chic. Since I’m DJing a disco night at the Cat this Friday it seems as if the stars were aligned.
Good Times is arguably the most important piece of dance floor music ever recorded, it’s samples were a major factor in the original success of hip hop via the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash, it’s influence is heard in such classics as Another One Bites the Dust, and it came around full circle (literally) 20 years later changing my life forever as the hook of Daft Punk’s Around the World. And that’s only the bass line. Damn. Here is the full 8+ min version. See you Friday!
