In 2007 Liverpudlian threesome The Wombats released two gloriously infectious indie pop singles: Kill The Director and Let’s Dance To Joy Division. The latter could have come off as annoying and obvious in the hands of a lesser unit like an OK GO or a Hot Hot Heat, but with The Wombats you couldn’t help but get caught up in it. Even Peter secretly liked it. Ok, when they actually sing the line “let the love tear us apart, I’ve found the cure for a broken heart” and the disco drums come in Peter probably didn’t like it. But the rest of us didn’t care.
So, that’s all well and good, but you may have missed the KGB remix B-side… where they actually mash up Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart with lead singer Matthew Murphy’s tale of putting in a Joy Division request to the DJ. And it works. Like ohmygod does it work. To weave in arguably the two greatest post punk songs ever written without making the listener immediately turn it off and put those songs on instead, is quite a feat. They also double the length, and it still feels like it could go on for another 6 min. Man I love this song.
