In case you didn’t get tickets to our sold out Christmas party at the Kennedy Center, there is still Jane Birkin at 9:30 Club.
I’ve always wanted to compile a mix CD of songs with orgasms in them. At one point I even kept a handy reference list, but sadly lost it, and thus interest in the idea. Def at the top of the list was one of the most notorious moans of all time, Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg’s Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus. Originally written for and recorded with then girlfriend Bridge Bardot, it was shelved at her, and her jealous husbands, request.
A couple years later in 1969 Serge and his new love interest Birkin recorded their version and it reached #69 on the charts. I’m not making this up. This was of course after it was banned in a number of countries and even labeled as smut by the Pope. Listening to it today, it seems tame and sweetly romantic. Obviously people were not actually scandalized, just jealous that the couple was having more fun than they were. While some accounts of the slightly feistier Bardot version involve heavy petting in the studio, Birkin admits that theirs was recorded on opposite sides of the room, Gainsbourg adding that if it was real they’d have needed a 12-inch record.
Found on Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg recently and lovingly re-released by Light in the Attic Records:
