The British band Crystal Fighters may seem like they got their name from an internet indie band name generator, but it’s actually taken from an unfinished opera which member Laure Stockley’s grandfather had penned during his final months of insanity. Stockley came across it while clearing out the recluse’s remote home in the Basque countryside, a region that spans the border between France and Spain on the Atlantic coast.
On their debut album Star of Love they are able to meld modern electronic dance music and traditional Basque folk music and instrumentation into something that feels way less unforced than it should. Here is the album closer Follow, which you may have found yourself humming lately after hearing it expertly placed in a Puma sneaker commercial. In the full version, things are allowed to keep building into a danceable infectious frenzy. Enjoy:
