The second annual By The People festival officially kicked off on Friday with Halcyon’s stunning kick off bash at the Smithsonian Arts & Industries building – one of the festival’s main hubs. The evening featured remarks from festival VIPs, including Halcyon Co-Founder / CEO Kate Goodall and this year’s festival curator Jessica Stafford Davis, and a live dance performance by Halcyon Arts Lab fellow Tariq O’Meally.

The celebration welcomed artists and art-lovers alike for the first official glimpse at some of this year’s festival installations. The venue’s industrial, vintage vibes are the perfect complement to the vibrant, innovative art displays – ranging from provocative and affirmative selfie mirrors to a monumental installation honoring the GU272 enslaved individuals.

By The People has your arts fix covered from through June 23. They’re bringing a lineup of arts, dialogue, and performance events to venues in all four quadrants of the District every day, all completely free of charge. Check out the official schedule and register to attend with BTP. Look for activation at Union Market, a local art fair in Georgetown (keep scrolling for photos of the space), Solstice Saturday hours (til midnight!) at Smithsonian museums, river barges floating down the Anacostia and Potomac, and more.

P.S. Can’t deal with one more scooter? BTP has you covered – they’re offering complimentary shuttle services between various venues on June 22 and 23.
