I am not one for gimmicks, especially anything that resembles hometown tourism. I don’t get excited at the idea of cherry blossoms every year, especially when 1., there’s a cherry blossom tree in front of my house, and 2. I am not a fan of hordes of segway tourists descending on the capitol and threatening the lives of cyclists everywhere. Thankfully, this wasn’t gimmicky at all. The Odyssey, a passenger cruise ship of Entertainment Cruises, takes guests out and about the Potomac and allows them to view the sights from a new angle, away from almost all of the tourists on shore.

It’s also not too theme-heavy. This particular cruise is meant for Cherry Blossom season, but we weren’t inundated with insufferable amounts of pink. Save for a special cherry blossom cocktail on the menu, this cruise really could have suited any season– it just so happens that this is a spectacular view of those flowers.

What’s better than being able to use boozy brunch beverages as an excuse to constantly remind other’s that you’re on a boat? Very little. The weekend buffet has something for every type of diner. Some people want steak and eggs, some people want bagels and lox with all the fixings, and some people can’t decide between breakfast and lunch, but they don’t have to. The ship moves at an incredibly steady pace that you barely notice, so no need to worry about sea sickness here.

The most important feature of the cruise is the timing. A 2 hour cruse form 10:00 a.m. to noon is the perfect amount of time to stay on the water without anything getting boring, and gives the ship enough time to explore the potomac from every angle. Nothing is redundant or unnecessary here.

If you’re a scrooge about cherry blossom season like myself (hello, allergies), Entertainment Cruises has more occasions to celebrate, meaning more excuses to yell, “I’M ON A BOAT.” There are gospel lunch cruises from April through November, and Mount Vernon excursions from March through October, and a Mother’s Day cruise on May 11th.

More information regarding schedules and menus can be found on the Entertainment Cruises website.
