We’re back for a new round of Best Weekday Bets! ! Each day will feature a top pick in the areas of 1. fitness (active), 2. comedy, 3. culture, 4. film, 5. food + drink, 6. free, 7. music and 8. staying in (because let’s face it, sometimes you just want to not leave your couch, especially when it continues to be cold AF outside).
This week’s GIF theme is obviously American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, because it premieres on Wednesday and WE ALL NEED TO WATCH IT BECAUSE IT LOOKS AMAZING // HERE WE GO:
Monday, January 15
ACTIVE: Get active in every sense of the word today – there’s a rally being held at Times Square to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, and to speak out against Trump’s anti-immigration policies and criminal justice agenda. Go from 3-5pm and make your voice heard!
COMEDY: For LOLs, it’s a new Butterboy at Littlefield w/ Aparna Nancherla, Jo Firestone and Maeve Higgins! Tonight’s very funny lineup features Jena Friedman, Samantha Ruddy and more, and tickets are a steal at just $10 each!
CULTURE: If you’ve got work off today, make good use of that free time and head to BAM for The 32nd Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! This is a free event, so you have no excuse not to attend!
FILM: There’s a Gary Oldman double-feature at Metrograph tonight (Darkest Hour and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), and Gary himself will be there to introduce the films! That’s a lot of Gary Oldman for one Monday!
FOOD + DRINK: Tonight I’ll recommend you hit up Full Circle Bar for an evening of drinking and painting along to Bob Ross videos! It’s a free event, painting materials will be provided, and they’ll have a bunch of Bob Ross-themed cocktails for purchase as an added festive bonus!
FREE: If you’re still feelin’ the film vibes but don’t have any money to check stuff out, get to Videology for a free advance screening of Like Me!
MUSIC: In terms of tunes, my top pick goes to a Lydia Lunch gig at City Vineyard! Tickets are $15 a pop, so snag ’em here.
STAY IN: It’s my favorite YouTuber’s birthday today, so fall down a black hole of her videos! (Many of them are in Korean without subtitles, but I still love them anyway, and maybe you will, too!)
Tuesday, January 16
ACTIVE: As we come up on a year of this awful administration’s presence in the White House, I’d urge all of us to consider taking this $35 breathing class tonight. (Bring your own mat, pillow and water!)
COMEDY: Littlefield continues its solid programming tonight with FEELINGS: A Talk Show w/ Giulia Rozzi! Guests include Janelle James, Katina Corrao, Josh Rabinowitz and more, and tickets are a very reasonable $8-$10 each.
CULTURE: Head to The Gutter to watch a whole bunch of animated short films at the latest round of ANNY! As always, it’s free!
FILM: It’s a Tom Hanks palooza at Syndicated this week, but seeing as Big is my favorite, I will recommend you choose tonight to swing by for a $4 screening!
FOOD + DRINK: Tonight head to Union Hall for a live podcast taping of Ask Mimi, ft. legendary 91-year-old food critic Mimi Sheraton! She’ll be taking calls to give advice on food and life, and Mo Rocca and Angela Dimayuga will be special bonus guests // tickets are just $15, so GET ‘EM!
FREE: Back in the realm of comedy, we’ve got a rad-sounding show called Stevie (as in Nicks) at Our Wicked Lady; hosted by Marcia Belsky, Drew Anderson and Sam Taggart, the lineup features Emmy Blotnick, Mitra Jouhari and more! And it’s all zero dollars!
MUSIC: 100% go see YACHT at Bowery Ballroom tonight! Tickets are $15 a pop. You can also tide yourself over until showtime by checking out my recent interview with Claire L. Evans! (We talked about everything from the world’s largest instrument to the Marfa Lights to Twin Peaks Bob, and it was p. great.)
STAY IN: I’m a sucker for The Middle and Fresh Off The Boat, so if you’re planning on staying in tonight, let your evening be sponsored in part by ABC!
Wednesday, January 17
ACTIVE: House of Yes is hosting a dance party where all guests must wear wigs – it’s free w/ RSVP, and I honestly cannot think of a better way to get your steps in than while wearing a ridiculous wig on the dance floor. YES TO THIS!
COMEDY: Get your LOLs in AND support a good cause over at Littlefield, where Janeane Garofalo, David Cross, Jo Firestone and more will perform at Benefit for Brooklyn New School 3rd Grade Africa Curriculum! Tickets are $12-$15 each.
CULTURE: Before/On/After: William Wegman and California Conceptualism opens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art today, so be among the first to check it out!
FILM: If you’re a Belle and Sebastian fan, make a beeline for Metrograph; Stuart Murdoch and Stevie Jackson will be in-house to present screenings of The Servant and Stolen Kisses!
FOOD + DRINK: It’s Wepa Wednesday at La Esquina! Go forth and enjoy tacos ‘n drag queens. (Also consider taking part in their coat drive for the Ali Forney center! Lightly used clothing, shoes and coats are all accepted.)
FREE: This one is a no-brainer! Just swing by Videology to take advantage of a new round of Parks & Rec bingo, which is, as always, F-R-E-E!
MUSIC: Tonight catch the inimitable Trixie Whitley churning out tunes at Park Church Co-op (with special guests Chocolate Genius inc. and Kid Koala) for $20-$25!
STAY IN: American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace premieres tonight, and if you’re not watching it, I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU.
