My friend Stephanie Hasz and I have the best hangs. Our hangs make mutual friends jealous. All the time they’re asking how they can have better hangs. I keep telling them to give up because you’ll never really get it but they don’t to give up and I respect that. Since it’s the end of the year, we decided to rank the best hangs of 2014. This list is comprehensive. It’s not the Stephanie Hasz/Brandon Wetherbee best hangs of 2014 (that would be incredibly selfish), no, this is an all encompassing list of all of the best hangs of 2014.

5. Digital Hangs

Stephanie

Brandon and I have never lived in the same city for the entirety of our friendship and yet, he knows almost everything about my life. How is this possible? Digital hangs. Maybe you didn’t even know that you could hang out on the ‘net–this is why you’re not having optimal hangs.

I never feel disconnected from Brandon because I know that I can always email him a joke about Matchbox 20 or talk about Katt Williams on Facebook or Tweet about some dumb thing one of us wrote on the Internet. Also, he has an iPhone, so we can iMessage, and if you can’t iMessage, you definitely can’t have great hangs.

Brandon

Talking on the phone is weird. Not talking about Katt Williams is weirder. I message my Katt Williams understanding friends as much as possible. Katt Williams helps friendship grow, even if it’s via email.

Why was this a good hang?

Distance does not matter. When Katt Williams news breaks, it must be shared.

4. Comedy Expo preview show

Brandon

Surprise hang! I travelled to Chicago to perform at Stephanie’s comedy festival. I arrived a day early to do another show because I’m selfish. Because I’m super selfish I also asked to crash at her place. Doubly selfish and she was cool with it. After my show I decided to stop by Stephanie’s pre-festival weekly show. Guess what? Funniest show I’ve seen in 2014! Four hours of amazing stand up from comics from around the country. My friend didn’t even know I was going! Perfect hang! My night ended at 3 a.m. with me yelling at mutual friend Goodrich about how he will most likely die alone. Stephanie was still out having fun. Magical!

Stephanie

I forgot that Brandon coming to Parlour Car was a surprise until I read what he wrote. I was out of my mind with festival-planning stress, but seeing Brandon pop up while I was running around at that show was such a treat. There were roughly 3 dozen comics at that show, so we didn’t hang a lot one-on-one, but sometimes, incorporating other people into your hangs can strengthen them. I stayed late at the show to mack on out-of-town comedians, Brandon took Goodrich back to my place, and they had their own great hang without me–their first solo hang. Friends becoming friends through friends while friends try to hook up with friends thanks to the help of friends. Now that’s what I call a hang!

Why was this a good hang?

Seeing your friend do something that they love and doing it really well makes for supportive friendship!

3. House Show in D.C.

Stephanie

In June, I made 3 men drive to Washington, D.C. with me so we could tell jokes and–you guessed it–HANG. Brandon set up a house show for us in some kind of mansion for goth adults. The show was on the roof, which allowed us to have a classic dad-style hang: climbing ladders, drinking beer, and cursing about extension cables. It’s important to make time to visit friends, but it’s even more important to diversify your hangs.

Bonus points go to my childhood friend, Jessica Ernst, for bringing New Glarus beer all the way from Wisconsin, making this a truly special hang.

Brandon

D.C. comics saw Chicago comics and Chicago comics met good D.C. people and now everyone is friends. No one pushed anyone, which was very good because on the ground was a large grill and on the roof was a not at all stable roof.

Why was this a good hang?

Grilling brings people together.

2. SXSW #Hands

Stephanie

This March, Brandon and I did something unprecedented: we flew somewhere to hang where neither of us live. Am I describing a vacation? No, we’re performers. Our lives are a goddamn vacation.

This trip was hard. We almost got murdered. We stressed out about shows. It took us 2 days to find the parts of Austin that aren’t highways. Still, we came out of it better friends than ever. Sometimes, you need a difficult hang to become closer.

Also, we met Landlady and they’re the best.

Brandon

Most people spend their SXSW time trying to ‘make connections’ or ‘discover bands’ or ‘brand ambassador something’ but we didn’t. We made up a hand symbol for hashtags. Suckers live in the real world, we live in the digital age.

Why was this a good hang?

Everything is silly and Landlady are great.

1. November 26 Bar Crawl

Brandon

We are not bar crawl people! We do not crawl! We are reasonable people in their 30s with jobs and responsibilities. But since it was the night before Thanksgiving I told my good friend that WE WERE GOING ON A BAR CRAWL!!! (I did this in all caps) and she responded in all caps because that’s how good hangs start.

My friend is a witch and we wanted to impress/confuse our other friends so we kind of tracked our journey via Twitter with the hashtag #witch. This was my favorite response:

Stephanie

I knew this was going to be a great hang from the moment Brandon asked me if I wanted to binge drink like we were in our 20s. For a week, I was giddy with excitement. I worried that I was too excited about it, until Brandon Instagrammed a photo explaining how excited he was. I don’t remember if he used #friendship, but in my heart, he did.

This hang got even better when Brandon showed up at my apartment and informed me that not only would we be binge drinking, we would be going on an entire BAR CRAWL. At this point, I was so excited that I was giggling and clapping uncontrollably. I don’t have any other friends who inspire that kind of glee in me–not even my best friend. Brandon is not my best friend, Katie McVay is because she would probably doxx me if I said otherwise.

Drinking with Brandon is great because he asks me real questions and gives me real answers and has a personally challenging social media strategy. Bar crawling with Brandon is even better because we can take breaks from yelling at each other in bars to yell at each other in streets, and he never tells me to shut up when I explain different dates I went on at every bar.

Why was this a good hang?

We walked around and talked and made other people jealous.
