As the Oscars approach, we figured we’d use this week to run some short movies made by now award winning directors back when they were just annoying film majors and part time video store clerks.
We kick off today with Christopher Nolan‘s DOODLEBUG. Prior to Memento, Inception, the criminally underseen Following, Batman Begins and Dark Knight Nolan made this sci-fi mystery about an unhinged man’s attempt to squash a bug, only to discover that he is in fact harming himself. (of course)
Compulsive Nolan groupies will discover in these sparse 3 minutes the early stages of his fixation with narrative boundaries and the themes that he would later explore on a larger scale. (and comparing the characterization of the central character to the dark and conflicted performance of Heath Ledger’s Joker, many years later, is not out of question either).
