Here are my picks for the 10 beers not to miss at Saturday’s Snallygaster.
BLUEJACKET SNALLYGASTER 2014: BARREL-AGED W/ BLACK MULBERRIES
BARREL-AGED SAISON (CABERNET FRANC; W/ BRETTANOMYCES & BLACK MULBERRIES) | WASHINGTON, DC | 7% | WASHINGTON, DC DEBUT!
One of the barrel-aged versions of Bluejacket’s Snallygaster beer, this one has black mulberries and is aged in a Cabernet barrel.
HARDYWOOD PARK GINGERBREAD STOUT
IMPERIAL STOUT (W/ SPICES) | VIRGINIA | 9.0%
This was the first beer I heard about from this brewery. The release draws big crowds every year. Try it while you can.
BARREL-AGED MEAD (W/ BRETTANOMYCES) | MARYLAND | 8.5%
Millstone is making really cool ciders these days, brewing them like their beers. This one uses the Belgian wild yeast Brettanomyces.
BERLINER WEISSE (W/ GINGER & PINK PEPPERCORNS) | MARYLAND &
GERMANY | 3%
The German style Berliner Weisse is very light and tart which sounds like it will be great with peppercorns and ginger. I also trust anything that Stillwater brews.
BOULEVARD SAISON BRETT
SAISON (W/ BRETTANOMYCES) | MISSOURI | 8.5%
This yearly release knocks my socks off every time. The dry Saison works so well with the addition of Brettanomyces. There is nice hop kick as well. Do not miss this one.
BLUE MOUNTAIN SPOOKY
BARREL-AGED PUMPKIN ALE (BOURBON; W/ COCOA)| VIRGINIA | 8.2%
Bourbon barrel aged Pumpkin Ale with the addition of cocoa from Virginia’s excellent Blue Mountain Brewing Company.
CANTILLON FOU’ FOUNE
LAMBIC (W/ APRICOTS) | BELGIUM | 5%
Cantillon makes some of the best Lambic in the world. It’s highly sought after and not always easy to find. The Fou’ Foune is brewed with apricots, which should add a nice sweetness to the very sour Lambic.
MIKKELLER BEER GEEK BRUNCH WEASEL
IMPERIAL STOUT (W/ VIETNAMESE CIVET COFFEE) | DENMARK | 10.9%
This beer is brewed with coffee – coffee that has been harvested from the excrement of a Vietnamese weasel. The coffee beans are considered a delicacy and it provides an awesome kick to this already excellent Imperial Stout.
FIRESTONE WALKER BRETTA WEISSE
BARREL-AGED BERLINER WEISSE (W/ BRETTANOMYCES) | CALIFORNIA |
4.9% | WASHINGTON, DC DEBUT!
Another Berliner Weisse, this one is brewed with Brettanomyces to add a little funk to the tart brew.
BARREL-AGED IMPERIAL STOUT (APPLE BRANDY) | FLORIDA & VIRGINIA
| 10% | WASHINGTON, DC DEBUT
Imperial Stout aged in an apple brandy barrel from two of the most buzzed about breweries in the country.
