The October edition of Bandcamp Friday is THIS Friday, October 2nd!
Quick refresher in case you need it – Bandcamp Friday is an amazing thing where the platform directs 100% of sales to the artists’ pockets. The once-monthly phenomenon was initially born to aid musicians (who’ve been hit especially hard by the pandemic and the resulting restrictions); while it was only meant to be a short-term deal, Bandcamp has continued to extend it as the tribulations of Covid-19 wear on (and on, and on).
“Because the pandemic is far from over, we’ll continue to hold Bandcamp Fridays on the first Friday of every month until the end of the year.”
HELL YES! Remaining dates are as follows // set your various alarms accordingly:
October 2, 2020
November 6, 2020
December 4, 2020
All run from 3am ET to 3am ET. (That’s midnight PT to midnight PT if you’ve got a California state of mind. You can also just peep this handy dandy website to make sure you’ve got the time zone correct.)
Bandcamp usually gives a full rundown of labels and artists are offering donations, special merch and more each designated Friday; there are usually limited-edition bundles, exclusive new music, discounts…you name it, all to support artists and causes we love. Check back on their website for more details later this week.
If you need some inspiration, here’s a living Google Doc ft. 2600+ Black producers, artists and labels to support anytime (but especially on Bandcamp Fridays when they stand to benefit more) who are currently using the platform. (A great discovery resource, and should help you plan out your purchases better in advance!) Bandcamp is also always running great pieces on tunes, so scope what they think if you’re in search of ideas.
And if you want a few PERSONAL recs, over the summer I got some great stuff from Serena Isioma, Debby Friday, Coco & Clair Clair, Christelle Bofale, Mr. Mitch, Gemma, Gavin Turek, Charlotte Adigéry (Yin Yang Self-Meditation is highly relaxing // v. recommended for this dumbass times) Noods, BL Shirelle, Bedtime Khal, Moor Mother, Cult Party, 10th Letter, Hannah Mayree, Joey Anderson, Chanti Darling and Mags. I also finally got full access to my digital copy of Sad13’s Haunted Painting (which was just released last Friday) that I grabbed in advance a few months ago // recommended!
I haven’t figured out my Friday game plan just yet, but I think it’s gonna be more merch-focused this go-round than it has been previously // will be running a special edition of MERCH PARTY dedicated solely to dope ass merch, so stay tuned for that later this week!
