Capital Pride officially kicked off its 2015 season last night by revealing this year’s theme: FLASHBACK. The retro theme was announced in Georgetown with a sneak peek party at Malmaison. The ‘Flashback’ theme is a nod to the fact that Washington celebrates 40 years of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) pride events this year.
Several hundred people packed Malmaison in anticipation of the announcement. The successful event was a credit to the continuing leadership of Executive Director Ryan Bos and a Capital Pride team that includes a small staff, volunteers and board. Over the past few years, Capital Pride has grown from a just a yearly celebration into a cultural force offering year-round activities. It has become one of the largest celebrations in Washington and one of the largest cultural events in the entire Mid Atlantic.
What began as a modest march and block party in Dupont Circle 40 years ago has now grown into one of the largest LGBT events in the country. The main pride week in June alone sees dozens of events including a parade, street festival, Sunday concert, and opening dance party (produced with Brightest Young Things). More than 300,000 are expected to attend pride week events this year.
Over the past five years, Brightest Young Things has partnered with Capital Pride to produce the official pride week opening party. Now one of the largest LGBT dance parties in the country, past opening parties have included Big Freedia, Amanda Lepore, Sharon Needles, Willam, JD Samson, Ultra Nate, AVAN LAVA, Rye Rye, and lots of additional talent. Details on this years party will be announced this Spring. BUT SAVE THE DATE FOR JUNE 12TH and FILL OUT OUR TALENT WISHLIST SURVEY HERE.
